About the Role
At Stony Brook Medicine, Maintenance Supervisors 1 supervise, coordinate, and direct the activities of skilled, semiskilled, and unskilled trades positions engaged in maintenance, repair, rehabilitation, and construction activities.
Responsibilities
- Supervise and plan the work for a subordinate maintenance crew of skilled, semiskilled, and unskilled employees.
- Use tools of the carpentry trade, including hand tools, portable power tools, shop equipment, and standard measuring instruments.
- Examine blueprints to determine dimensions, material, and labor requirements; order materials and supplies.
- Prepare rough sketches or plans to scale from verbal or written instructions as required.
- Assign staff to projects, providing verbal instructions and blueprints or plans.
- Coordinate with supervisors from other trades to schedule work and ensure project continuity.
- Inspect projects in progress and upon completion to ensure adherence to schedule and plan.
- Inspect work performed by outside contractors for conformance with project specifications.
- Maintain written records of work performed, labor, and materials used.
- Prepare periodic written evaluations of subordinate work performance.
Requirements
- Working knowledge of structural maintenance and carpentry techniques.
- Working knowledge of the math involved in the carpentry trade.
- Working knowledge of the principles of supervision.
- Basic knowledge of practices and techniques of trades supervised other than carpentry.
- Ability to read architectural blueprints and interpret building and furniture plans.
- Ability to plan, lay out, and complete varied carpentry work.
- Ability to use tools, machines, equipment, and materials of the carpentry trade.
- Ability to make standard arithmetic computations for sizing, locating details, and calculating material and labor requirements.
- Ability to perform the physical tasks required of a carpenter.
- Ability to understand and carry out written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to train and supervise others.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Must meet qualifications of Trades Specialist (Carpenter) plus one year of trades experience.
- Trades Specialist requirements include one of the following:
- Four years of full-time experience in carpentry under a skilled tradesperson, providing training equivalent to that in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program.
- An equivalent combination of experience and training gained through completion of technical courses in carpentry at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services.
- Successful completion of a two-year Trades Specialist (Cabinet Shop/Carpenter) traineeship or a two-year carpenter training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program, such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association-Partnership Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship and Certificate Program.

Pay
The anticipated salary range for this position is $56,506 per year. The specific salary offer will be based on the candidate’s validated years of comparable experience. The posted salary for this role is $60,506 per year. Some positions offer annual supplemental pay, such as location pay for UUP, CSEA, and PEF full-time positions ($4,000).
