Maintenance Supervisor 1
About the role
The Maintenance Supervisor 1 oversees a team of skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled workers in facilities managed by the Division of Military and Naval Affairs. The position involves planning, supervising, and providing technical direction to staff, preparing rough sketches, assigning tasks, and ensuring adherence to codes and regulations.
Responsibilities
- Plan, supervise, and provide technical direction to subordinate staff.
- Review job orders, blueprints, and specifications, and visit sites to determine project requirements.
- Prepare rough sketches and assign tasks to staff.
- Coordinate activities with supervisors and manage work schedules.
- Inspect work in progress and upon completion to ensure compliance with codes and regulations.
- Inspect work performed by contractors and reconcile purchasing and travel records.
- Train and supervise subordinates, assist with budget projections, and identify inventory needs.
- Perform a variety of trades including carpentry, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and general grounds maintenance.
- Communicate with higher-level supervisors and staff, and attend meetings.
- Supervise staff during periods of absence and travel as required.
Requirements
- Three (3) years of permanent New York State service in a maintenance, engineering, or similar title series with experience in mechanical or building trades.
- Five (5) years of full-time experience in maintenance work, including direct supervision of staff.
- Completion of an appropriate two-year technical school may substitute for one year of experience.
- Minimum qualification of General Mechanic, SG-12, with at least two (2) years of direct supervision.
- Must be at least 18 years old and have a High School Diploma or GED.
- Valid driver's license to operate a motor vehicle in the State of New York.
- Ability to work at heights, push/pull/lift heavy objects, and work in various weather conditions.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, including MSWord and Excel.
- Successfully complete training associated with assigned data systems within 90 days of receiving computer access.
- Pass a background investigation and clearance as required by NGB standards.
Qualifications
- Working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local facility and building codes, health and safety standards.
- Working knowledge of safety standards and procedures.
- Working knowledge of skilled and semi-skilled trades.
- Ability to read and interpret facility and grounds plans, specifications, manuals, and blueprints.
- Ability to perform standard arithmetic computations and address project details.
- Ability to get along with and interact with different groups of people.
- Ability to perform routine repairs and maintenance on equipment and facility structures.
- Ability to operate various construction equipment and vehicles.
- Ability to train and supervise subordinates.
- Reliability and trustworthiness.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.

Pay
The starting rate is $56,506 annually, with a potential hiring step increase based on prior state experience. The position is eligible for a Downstate adjustment of $4,000 annually.
