About the role

This position is a working supervisor with direct responsibility for the operation of the painting and masonry crews. The role involves planning and participating in the work, and deploying a subordinate crew of skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled employees engaged in specialized areas of painting and masonry in the building trades.

This individual must have a working knowledge of both the painting and masonry trades, including:

  • Skill in the preparation and application of paints to different types of surfaces
  • Removal and installation of wall coverings
  • Preparation of forms for concrete work
  • Knowledge of building materials such as brick, plaster, concrete, mortar, asphalt, stone, terrazzo, and block

This individual may act as the lead coordinator in multi-trade projects and is responsible for observing and inspecting the work of others to ensure sound maintenance practices are maintained.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and coordinate the work of painting and masonry crews
  • Plan and participate in painting and masonry projects
  • Train and supervise skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled employees
  • Schedule work and deploy resources efficiently
  • Read and interpret plans, diagrams, mechanical blueprints, and specifications
  • Estimate projects, calculate materials and labor requirements, and perform standard arithmetic computations
  • Use tools, machines, equipment, and materials of the painting and masonry trades
  • Communicate effectively with clients, staff, and students
  • Carry out oral and written instructions
  • Operate and maintain relevant software (Microsoft Word, Excel, email, MAXIMO work order system, KRONOS time management system)
  • Promote and practice Facilities Fundamental Management Objectives
  • Maintain professional conduct while representing the Department and University

Requirements

  • One year or more of experience as a skilled tradesperson in the paint and masonry trade
  • One year of supervisory experience with three or more skilled or unskilled employees
  • Working knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in painting and masonry trades
  • Understanding of principles of effective supervision
  • Ability to train, supervise, and schedule others
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints and specifications
  • Valid New York State driver’s license
  • Basic computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, email, MAXIMO, KRONOS)

Schedule

This position is assigned from 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM, Monday through Friday. Saturday and Sunday are off days. The role carries essential employee status, requiring availability for emergency call-ins and overtime work as necessary.
