Essential Job Functions

  • Aids Crew Leader in planning, scheduling, and implementing construction, maintenance, and operation activities to ensure quality water, wastewater, and drainage services.
  • Performs labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew, including pavement cutting, ditch digging, manhole and line cleaning, main and pipe repair, laying and backfilling.
  • Serves as a pump operator, servicing water supply, sewer lift stations, and other pumps.
  • Maintains safe operating conditions at work sites, ensuring compliance with safety and security standards.
  • Performs routine inspections and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment, reporting defects or needed repairs to supervisor.
  • Cleans equipment and maintains its proper condition after use.
  • Trains Maintenance Specialist I's and II's to enhance their skills in maintenance, construction, and repair of water, wastewater, and storm drainage systems.
  • Locates utility lines from relevant sources before excavation.
  • Responds to customer complaints about water leaks, pressure loss, or no water; sewer leaks, backups, or odors; evaluates situations; explains findings to supervisor; informs residents and business owners about service disruptions and reinstatement times.
  • Assists in training Maintenance Specialist I's and II's to increase their skills in the maintenance, construction, and repair of water, wastewater, and storm drainage systems.
  • Assists in locating gas, telephone, power, cable television, water, and sewer lines from the appropriate sources prior to excavation.

Minimum Requirements

  • Graduation from High School or GED with three (3) years of experience relating to construction, maintenance, or repair of water distribution and sewer collection systems.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
  • Ability to operate heavy equipment such as dump truck and backhoe.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time; ability to work safely; ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments, and the public; ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to serve as Lead Worker over Maintenance Specialist I's and II's in the absence of the Crew Leader.

Other Requirements

  • Valid driver's license required. Must have and maintain a good driving record in accordance with the driving standards as established by the City of Rowlett.
  • Must report all traffic citations to his/her departmental Director or his/her designee within two working days of receipt.
  • Valid Texas Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required with Tanker endorsement or ability to obtain within 6 months of being hired.
  • Must reside within a 1-hour response time from the Public Works Building, employee will have six (6) months from employment date in which to relocate.
  • Will be subject to covering/handling first-call or back-up call when assigned.
  • Must have a minimum of a Class "C" Water Distribution License and Wastewater Collection System Class 2 License or be able to obtain within 12 months of being hired.
  • Ability to lift tools and equipment which may weigh up to 150 pounds.
