About the role

The Maintenance Section Supervisor II oversees maintenance office operations including both in-house and contracted maintenance work as well as emergency response. They play a key role in budget management and planning for roadway and bridge maintenance.

Responsibilities

  • Administers and inspects contracted maintenance activities.
  • Handles public complaints.
  • Inspects road conditions, work-in-progress and work completed by the crews and contractors.
  • Plans, coordinates and implements emergency response to inclement weather, flooding, accidents and hazardous material spills affecting area roadways.
  • Plans, schedules and coordinates work project needs to include personnel, equipment and material with the Area Engineer and other district staff on a regular basis.
  • Prepares and monitors the budget.
  • Prioritizes and assigns projects to the maintenance section assistant and crew chiefs; guides them in the planning and scheduling of personnel/materials/equipment necessary to complete the work; ensures projects follow established safety guidelines.
  • Responsible for maintenance section office activities including human resources, public relations, facilities, inventory management and general office administrative matters.
  • Responsible for overseeing the operation and maintenance of light and heavy equipment.
  • Trains other employees.

Requirements

  • Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.
  • Experience: 8 years roadway maintenance or construction-related work.
  • Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle. Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or have obtained a Class "A" CDL, from date of application.

  • Methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work.
  • Materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance.
  • Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes.
  • Applicable plans, specifications and estimates preparation, review, processing and compliance requirements.
  • The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Incident management procedures.
  • Inventory/stock control procedures.
  • Maintenance contract inspection procedures.
  • Supervising technical staff.
  • Scheduling work assignments.
  • Public relations for maintaining effective working relationships with individuals and groups, both internal and external.
  • Using light highway equipment.
  • Administrative support practices and procedures to include writing, editing and report writing techniques, recording meeting notes, record keeping and records management.
  • Planning, assigning, directing, coordinating and reviewing the work of professional, administrative and technical employees.
  • Coinciding labor, materials, and equipment.
  • Preparing and maintaining confidential and sensitive records, files, and reports.
  • Training in a classroom, office, or field environment.
  • Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others.
  • Managing financial and personnel resources to achieve individual and organizational goals.
