Maintenance Section Supervisor III - Burnet Maintenance Office (Austin Dist)
About the Role
This position oversees a maintenance section and is responsible for providing a safe driving thoroughfare within a geographic area of the state through the maintenance of all roads, structures, and rights-of-way. The role involves supervising technical and clerical employees, responding to emergency notifications, and maintaining contact with governmental officials, private entities, and the public. Employees establish their own work plans and priorities to meet set objectives, handling issues independently.
The position includes overseeing more than 1,000 lane miles, inspecting maintenance contracts, materials, and processes, performing roadway repairs, operating equipment, and managing traffic control.
Responsibilities
- Handle public complaints.
- Inspect road conditions, work-in-progress, and completed work by crews and contractors.
- Plan, coordinate, and implement emergency responses to inclement weather, flooding, accidents, and hazardous material spills affecting area roadways.
- Plan, schedule, and coordinate work project needs, including personnel, equipment, and materials, with the Area Engineer and other district staff.
- Prepare and monitor the budget.
- Prioritize and assign projects to maintenance section assistants and crew chiefs; guide planning and scheduling of personnel, materials, and equipment; ensure adherence to safety guidelines.
- Oversee maintenance section office activities, including human resources, public relations, facilities, inventory management, and general office administration.
- Oversee the operation and maintenance of light and heavy equipment.
- Train other employees.
- Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.
This position requires driving a state vehicle and responding to emergency notifications within 45 minutes on a 24-hour basis.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 9 years of roadway maintenance or construction-related work (full-time or prorated part-time equivalent). Related college education or technical training may substitute for experience on a year-per-year basis.
- 3 years of supervisory or managerial experience. Project leader or lead worker experience may substitute for supervisory experience.
- Valid driver’s license; Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and Safety Impact Certificate required.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
- Subject to extreme temperatures (below 32°F or above 100°F for more than one hour).
- Exposure to hazards such as moving vehicles, mechanical parts, high places, heat, or chemicals.
- Required to wear protective gear, including respirators, hard hats, or other devices.
- Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
- Climbing: Ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, etc.
- Balancing: Walking, standing, or crouching on various surfaces without falling.
- Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending the spine at the waist.
- Kneeling: Bending legs at the knee to rest on one or both knees.
- Crouching: Bending body downward and forward by bending legs and spine.
- Reaching: Extending hands and arms in any direction.
- Standing for prolonged periods.
- Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words.
- Hearing: Perceiving sound at normal speaking levels and receiving information orally.
This position is physically demanding and requires a pre-employment physical. Must pass a drug test prior to employment and will be subject to random drug testing.
