Responsibilities

  • Serves as lead worker (e.g., provides work direction, training) over inmates or other assigned staff in performance of semi-skilled and skilled maintenance repair work (e.g., electrical, carpentry, grounds keeping, plumbing).
  • Performs semi-skilled and skilled maintenance repair of equipment:
    • Electrical: light fixtures, outlets, switches, motors, appliances, circuits, installs fixtures, repairs/adjusts fans, clocks, cookers, electrical components of heating/cooling systems, consoles, replaces disconnects and fuses.
    • Carpentry: doors, locks, cabinets, chairs, desks, floors, walls, windows, stairways, partitions.
    • Plumbing: water/steam lines, sewer pipes, trap fittings, fixtures, pumps, regulators, valves, faucets, toilets, sinks, bathtubs, heating radiators, chilled water lines.
  • Performs interior custodial duties (e.g., mops, sweeps, waxes floors, washes walls and windows).
  • Performs exterior grounds keeping duties, including snow/ice removal from sidewalks.
  • Continuously inspects buildings and equipment for needed repairs or replacements.
  • Performs systematic and routine preventive maintenance of assigned area.
  • Operates machine tools and welding equipment to repair metal parts and equipment.
  • Ensures secure maintenance of tools; completes tool counts and inventories.
  • Assists in related job crafts as required.
  • Controls/restricts inmate movement to assigned areas; conducts searches of inmates when a security breach is suspected.
  • Responds to emergencies.
  • Attends meetings and trainings; participates on institution committees.

Requirements

  • Formal education in arithmetic (addition/subtraction) and in reading, writing, and speaking common English vocabulary.
  • 12 months of training or experience in maintenance repair (e.g., basic electrical, plumbing, carpentry, masonry, and use of associated hand/power tools and equipment).
  • Valid commercial driver’s license required if operating motor equipment regulated by Ohio Revised Code Sections 4506.01 & 4506.12.
  • For Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry: successful completion of mandated basic firefighter/introduction to fire behavior course (S-130/S-190).
  • Equivalent minimum class qualifications may substitute for experience, but not for mandated licensure.
