About the role

The Columbus Zoo Family of Parks is seeking a dedicated Maintenance Plumber to join their Facilities/Trades Maintenance team. This full-time position offers opportunities to work in both indoor and outdoor environments, ensuring smooth operations across multiple sites including the Columbus Zoo, Zoombezi Bay, Safari Golf Club, and The Wilds.

Responsibilities

• Installs, diagnoses, and repairs plumbing systems, including pipes, fixtures, pumps, valves, and miscellaneous fittings.
• Inspects building facilities and equipment, providing maintenance as needed.
• Performs acetylene and electric welding as required.
• Supports and assists in various activities, including special events like Wildlights and Zoofari.
• Maintains public restrooms and grounds, reporting issues to supervisors.
• Communicates with custodial staff on a weekly basis regarding restroom operations.
• Ensures safety and compliance with standard operating procedures and equipment maintenance.
• Monitors and maintains animal and human filtration systems, water quality, and life support systems.
• Participates in cross-training activities and performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Certificate of Completion of Apprenticeship in plumbing issued by the U.S. Department of Labor or the Ohio State Apprenticeship Council (substitutes for one year of journeyman plumber experience).
• Backflow preventer inspection license required within six months of placement.
• Technical School (2-year degree) in related field preferred.
• 5 years' plumbing experience preferred.
• Minimum 2 years' experience as a journeyman plumber preferred.
• Knowledge of plumbing methods, materials, and equipment.
• Ability to use plumbing tools and read blueprints.
• Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
• Ability to plan and organize work efficiently.

Skills

• Knowledge of electric, carpentry, and HVAC.
• Ability to communicate well with colleagues and guests.
• Ability to adhere to safety protocols and the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium's drug-free workplace policy.
