About the role

We have an opening for a Maintenance Mechanic in the Mechanical Utilities Division within the Infrastructure Maintenance and Utilities Department. This role involves operating and maintaining a wide variety of mechanical and electrical equipment supporting LLNL’s plant and research facilities, including heating, air conditioning, water supply, sewage treatment, and related utilities. Work may require travel to Site 300 in Tracy, CA, and full-time on-site presence is required due to the nature of the work.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain site-wide mechanical and electrical equipment using materials, power tools, and hand tools applicable to the trade.
  • Work from drawings and verbal/written instructions to keep plant and research systems operational.
  • Maintain and operate equipment associated with underground utilities distribution systems, including natural gas, compressed air, sewer, and water (city, low conductivity, and demineralized).
  • Maintain, operate, and repair water pumps, vacuum pumps, LN2 dewars, air compressors, valves, and other plant equipment.
  • Operate specialized mechanical systems (e.g., high-pressure steam boilers) and take corrective measures during malfunctions within specified timeframes per State codes.
  • Prepare standard reports, permit requirements, deficiency forms, and preventive maintenance work requests using written or computer formats.
  • Interact with co-workers, supervisors, engineers, and skilled technical personnel.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance (U.S. citizenship required).
  • High school diploma, completion of apprentice training, or equivalent combination of education and related work experience.
  • Basic skills, knowledge, and abilities in maintenance mechanic tasks, including journey-level machine shop experience.
  • Experience operating and maintaining mechanical and electrical equipment such as pumps, valves, and flow controls for heating, air conditioning, water supply, and sewage treatment systems.
  • Proficiency with hand tools and power tools of the trade (e.g., grinders, torque wrenches, micrometers, pneumatic tools, presses, shears).
  • Working knowledge of related trades, including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and millwright.
  • Basic understanding of applicable safety policies and procedures.
  • Basic written and computer skills for completing work orders, time reporting, and training.
  • Effective customer service and communication skills to interact with personnel at all levels and across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Valid California driver’s license and ability to obtain and maintain certifications/licenses such as California State Certificate Backflow Tester and/or State of California Water Distribution Operator License.
  • Ability to work scheduled shifts (day, swing, owl), emergency overtime, weekends, and travel to Site 300.
  • Ability to become medically qualified to wear respiratory and protective equipment.

Pay

$43.60 - $52.99 hourly. This position is under a Collective Bargaining Agreement, and step placement will be determined after qualifications are assessed during the interview process.

Additional Information

This is a Career Indefinite position, open to both Lab employees and external candidates. Site 300, located approximately six miles southwest of Tracy, CA, is an experimental test site with about 200 employees. Employees assigned to Site 300 may be exposed to the organism causing San Joaquin Valley Fever (coccidioidomycosis).

A pre-placement medical examination may be required. External applicants must pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test, including testing for marijuana use as per Federal Law. Depending on job duties, use of personal mobile devices may be restricted in Limited Areas.
