About the role

Repairs and maintains machinery and electromechanical equipment in packaging, processing, distribution, and plant infrastructure. Trains and mentors lesser-skilled maintenance mechanics.

Responsibilities

• Installs, operates, maintains, repairs, lubricates, and troubleshoots complex processing and high-speed packaging machinery and other equipment (e.g., gear boxes, variable speed drives, pumps, compressors, dust-collecting equipment, code daters, check weighers).
• Performs predictive and preventative maintenance activities as outlined in the CMMS system.
• Installs, maintains, and troubleshoots all types of A/C and D/C electrical equipment.
• Fabricates components using standard shop equipment including lathe, mill, drill press, brake, shear, band saw, and various welding equipment.
• Operates production equipment as part of troubleshooting and validation of completed maintenance activity.
• Assists Engineering in the installation of new equipment; works from drawings, verbal instructions, and/or sketches.
• Works with technical support, the operations group, and peer mechanics to resolve problematic machine or personnel issues.
• Helps maintain spare parts inventory for the plant by checking out parts, using parts ordering procedures, and restocking inventory.
• Helps maintain shop areas and parts room so they are clean and orderly.
• Actively participates in root cause analysis and other plant continuous improvement initiatives; recommends and implements improvement ideas.
• Occasionally performs work in other areas such as building maintenance.
• Complies with safety and cGMP requirements; follows lock-out/tag-out (LO/TO) and all safety procedures; wears personal protective equipment as directed.

• Participates on safety teams and/or completes safety-related activities as part of regular job responsibilities.

Requirements

• Associate’s degree (A.A.) or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school plus a minimum of two years of related experience OR a minimum of five years of related experience.
• Comprehensive knowledge of machine troubleshooting, electrical, mechanical, fabrication, pneumatics, hydraulics, OSHA standards, cGMPs, and lock-out/tag-out.
• Food or pharmaceutical industry experience preferred.

• Ability to read and understand electrical and mechanical blueprints, use simple shop math, and knowledge of company, local, state, and federal electrical codes.
• Ability to quickly understand the theory of operation of both processing and high-speed packaging equipment.
• Familiarity with PLC, solid-state, and servo control.
• Working knowledge of electrical test equipment such as digital multimeter, amp probe, megger, etc.
• Ability to work other shifts and weekends and to travel to other facilities.

Physical Demands

• Regularly required to stand and move throughout the facility.
• Use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms, including overhead reaching and horizontally on a ladder.
• Ascend and/or descend stairs; bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
• Regularly lift, move (including dragging items), slide, raise, and/or place:
  • Step on and off ladders and equipment at 24 inches.
  • Grasp 50 lbs. of force.
  • Push and pull 42 lbs. of force at 36 inches.
  • Lift up to 60 lbs. from floor to waist.
  • Lift up to 60 lbs. from 31 inches, carry for 5 feet, and return to 31-inch surface.

Work Environment

• Regularly works near moving mechanical parts.
• Frequently exposed to herbal aromas, dust, and/or airborne particles, some classified as allergens or irritants.
• Works in all areas of manufacturing facilities with direct exposure to ingredients (powders and liquids), mixes (powders and liquids), equipment, and packaging.
• Occasionally works in high, precarious places and in outside weather conditions.
• Occasionally exposed to fumes, cold, and heat.
• Required to travel to other facilities.
• Noise level is usually moderately loud; in some areas, louder hearing protection is required.
