Maintenance Mechanic - Grounds

Responsibilities

• Provide emergency response to all hospital mechanical systems as required
• Perform general plumbing functions
• Perform general HVAC functions
• Perform routine preventive maintenance and repair on all utility systems
• Support construction/renovation project installations as assigned
• Perform general cleaning of maintenance areas and mechanical rooms
• Work efficiently and complete assigned tasks in a timely manner
• Project a positive and professional image of self and the hospital
• Perform general maintenance functions (e.g., updating work orders, service calls)
• Maintain and troubleshoot refrigeration systems (ice machines, coolers, refrigerators, etc.)
• Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair boilers, Direct Digital Control systems, Pevco Tube systems, fire system controls, medical gas systems, generator systems, and computer monitoring systems
• Analyze blueprints, schematics, and drawings to determine efficient installation of new or upgraded systems
• Perform a variety of skilled trade functions (plumbing, painting, HVAC, carpentry, etc.) to complete projects within established time frames
• Install plumbing systems (water and sanitary piping)
• Replace and rough in water closets, sinks, and showers
• Use power tools such as drain snakes, pipe threaders (manual and portable), pro press, and drills

Requirements

• High school graduate or recognized equivalent plus formal trade/vocational school training, or five (5) years of related experience
• Completion of an apprenticeship program preferred
• Minimum of five (5) years’ experience as a millwright, steamfitter, plumber, HVAC technician, or tradesman in a commercial, industrial, or healthcare setting
• Clean, valid New York State driver’s license required

Skills

• Working knowledge of computer skills and Microsoft Outlook
• Working knowledge of building management systems and modern nurse call systems
• Working knowledge of plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and refrigeration systems
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints and prepare material takeoffs
• Ability to use standard hand tools, machinery, equipment, and precision measuring tools
• Ability to complete rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays as needed

Work environment and hazards

• Industrial setting; clinical setting occasionally
• Exposure Class I: routine or potential exposure to blood, body fluids, excretions, or secretions
• Intermittent to regular exposure to unpleasant physical conditions, including high temperatures and general outdoor seasonal weather conditions
• Occasional to regular exposure to situations that could cause moderate to serious injury or illness, including use of hand tools, power tools, operation of machinery and equipment, confined space entry, and materials/equipment cleaning with various cleaning solutions

Pay

$22.65–$32.30 per hour; pay is based on experience, skills, and education. Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act will be paid within the base salary equivalent of the stated hourly rates. The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on location.
