About the role
Covia is seeking a dynamic Maintenance Mechanic for its Tuscaloosa, AL location. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in ensuring the safe and productive operation of the plant.
Responsibilities
- Safety – Perform each and every job in a safe and timely manner. Pre-job safety discussions are mandatory before undertaking major maintenance tasks. These discussions outline all steps and safety concerns.
- Preventative Maintenance – Conduct all necessary preventative maintenance, including oil and grease replacements, pipeline and pump inspections, gland changes, plumbing, belt changing, and more. Ensure familiarity with various components like bearings, reducers, motors, and shafts.
- Dredge – Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to the dredge, including cutterhead, drive, piping, pumps, hydraulic winches, and electrical systems. Replace pump parts and bearing assemblies with minimal supervision and coach others.
- Drive Mechanisms – Work on and replace sheaves, pulleys, chains, sprockets, reducers, motors, and other components. Align motor shafts and couplings.
- Pumps and Blowers – Replace wear surfaces in pumps and fans, including liners, impellers, fans, shaft sleeves, and bearings.
- Welding – Choose appropriate rods and weld in various positions on different metals. Use cutting torches, dial indicators, verniers, calipers, micrometers, and TPM equipment.
- Electrical – Check fuses, breakers, and Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), and diagnose basic electrical issues.
- Housekeeping and Safety – Maintain cleanliness in the shop area according to Covia and Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) standards. Participate in safety and informational meetings.
- Operational Understanding – Understand the plant's flow sheet and equipment operation. Learn to operate all mobile equipment safely and efficiently.
- Production Support – Assist in filling production shifts when needed.
- Other Tasks – Perform additional tasks as directed by supervisors.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- 5 years of dredge/industrial sand experience preferred.
- Ability to diagnose mechanical failures, including burnt motors, blown fuses, seized bearings, and excessive wear.
- Desire to learn from experts and apply new information to work and operations.
- Basic electrical knowledge, including troubleshooting and identifying issues.
- Ability to read and understand parts schematics and blueprints.
- Basic computer skills for maintenance portion of the company's ERP system.
- Comfortable working in and around water.
- Pass a pre-employment weld test (AWS D1.1, 3G uphill, SMAW, 3/8" plate).
