About the Role
The Maintenance Mechanic supports BYU Food Services by maintaining, repairing, and installing dining and specialized equipment on campus. The role emphasizes professionalism, skill development, and mentoring student employees, all while upholding BYU's mission and standards.
Responsibilities
- Manage equipment installations, repair, and maintenance projects on campus.
- Responsible for budget, quality, schedule, and safety on each project.
- Procure materials and equipment delivery with vendors and suppliers.
- Affirm personal and others' safety in work areas.
- Hands-on work to complete projects, including demolition and installation.
- Install and repair food-related equipment.
- Perform maintenance on existing food-related equipment.
- Help with pre-construction meetings, including project phasing, schedules, reviewing construction documents, equipment selection, installation verification, equipment startup, and commissioning.
Requirements
- Two years of refrigeration experience or a two-year refrigeration certification from a technical school, and ability to obtain EPA Certification.
- Basic skill level and understanding of refrigeration, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, welding, food service equipment, ice machines, furnaces, and sheet metal work.
- The ability to maintain a good working relationship with all involved personnel, including treating others with respect and kindness.
- A valid Utah Drivers' License.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
- Pass a physical and lift test that includes handling a large auger for 30 minutes to 1-hour, 2–3 times per week; face and hand protection is required.
- Periodic exposure to unfavorable conditions due to unavoidable need to be in variable temperatures or wet environments, etc.
- Works inside cabinets and other confined spaces up to 3 hours per day; gloves, a coat, and head protection are recommended for safety.
- Works in freezer environments with temperatures around –20°F for approximately 40 minutes per day; appropriate cold-weather gear (gloves, coat, headgear) is required.
- Five years of refrigeration, steam, flight, and regular dish machine experience.
- Two years of ice machine installation, maintenance, & repair experience.
- At least two years of management, mentoring, and training experience.
- Experienced in HVAC diagnosis, repair and maintenance including furnaces, air conditioning, water heaters, refrigerators, gas, and electric ranges.
- Experienced in the reading of blueprints both electrical and mechanical and excellence in troubleshooting and repair of foodservice equipment and refrigeration.
Preferred
- Five years of refrigeration, steam, flight, and regular dish machine experience.
- Two years of ice machine installation, maintenance, & repair experience.
- At least two years of management, mentoring, and training experience.
- Experienced in HVAC diagnosis, repair and maintenance including furnaces, air conditioning, water heaters, refrigerators, gas, and electric ranges.
- Experienced in the reading of blueprints both electrical and mechanical and excellence in troubleshooting and repair of foodservice equipment and refrigeration.

Typical Starting Pay
Compensation will be based on qualifications and experience and is competitive with current market rates. The actual compensation offered will take into consideration internal equity and may vary based on the candidate’s job-related experience, knowledge, skills, and other relevant factors. Candidates with very significant work-related experience may receive a higher offer.
