Responsibilities
- Lead, train, and coach a small group of maintenance technicians in performing plant maintenance safely and effectively.
- Perform and lead mechanical, electrical, and electronic plant/equipment maintenance to minimize production downtime and maximize efficiency.
- Support, implement, and maintain food safety and quality practices as required through SQF.
- Ensure the team completes job duties in a manner that supports all plant safety, food safety, quality, and environmental practices.
- Lead a team in completing daily work schedule assignments, coaching and mentoring others to complete tasks.
- Train and coach others in complex maintenance and repair activities, including electronic, electrical, mechanical, HVAC, hydraulic, pneumatic, steam, and MMS systems.
- Troubleshoot and lead team repairs of mechanical problems on all plant equipment, including mechanical drive systems, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
- Troubleshoot and lead team repairs of electrical problems on plant and packaging/processing equipment, such as wiring, circuits, fuses, switches, electrical installations, transformers, motors, and AC & DC motor drives.
- Troubleshoot and lead team repairs of electronic problems on plant and packaging/processing equipment, such as programmable controllers, circuit boards, and electronic components.
- Provide feedback to planners and the Maintenance Supervisor to improve preventative maintenance plans, conduct equipment inspections, and replace items as needed.
- Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, electrical schematics, PLC logic, electronic diagrams, and related software systems.
- Use, understand, and manipulate computer systems for entering and retrieving data in EMS systems for maintenance record-keeping.
- Provide calibration and repair support for the ICV Program.
- Provide maintenance and operator training to ensure proper use of equipment.
- Design and fabricate replacement parts or equipment using welding, lathe, mill, press, or grinding as necessary.
- Track parts inventory, purchase or requisition replacement parts, and ensure installation when received.
- Perform building maintenance and repairs, including HVAC, roofs, windows, doors, and lighting.
- Maintain clean work and shop areas to avoid injury and sanitation issues.
- Use a computerized maintenance system for equipment history and parts.
- Provide input into mechanical, electrical, and electronic designs of equipment.
- Lead work teams, give direction to others, and perform any other assigned duties.
Requirements
- 2–4 years of vocational training in maintenance mechanics, including hydraulics, pneumatics, machine shop, electricity, electronics, and programmable computers.
- Knowledge of production machinery operation and maintenance.
- State licenses preferred: boilers, electrical, and refrigeration.
- Minimum 7–10 years of experience in plant and production equipment maintenance, including mechanical, electrical, and electronic repair.
Skills
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work effectively in a team-based environment.
- Ability to lead and mentor technical personnel and give direction to maintenance technicians and operations personnel.
- Ability to operate machine tools (lathe, mill, etc.), power tools, computers, electronic test equipment, multimeters, and welding equipment of all types.
- Extensive experience in hydraulics, HVAC, boilers, air compressors, ammonia systems, electronics, robotics, plumbing, mechanical alignment, and PLC.
- Ability to test out in each area at a local technical school.
- Willingness and ability to lead Continuous Improvement efforts for the department and plant systems.
- Manual dexterity for delicate electronic work.
- Physical ability to frequently stoop, squat, twist, reach, climb stairs, lift and carry 50–75 pound objects, and repetitively lift 20–50 pounds.
- Ability to distinguish between sounds or vibrations for equipment repair and colors for electronic wiring work.
- Ability to read blueprints and electrical schematics, troubleshoot plant and production equipment problems (mechanical, electrical, and electronic), and interact effectively with machine operators and vendors.
- Ability to troubleshoot and program programmable controllers, perform tasks from memory, work alone, and be self-directed.
- Ability to operate tools and equipment.
Additional Requirements
- Must be able to read, write, and communicate in English.
- Must wear company-issued uniforms (snap-front shirt & pants) and required PPE (bump-cap, hair net, beard net, safety glasses, ear plugs, gloves, steel-toed shoes, etc.).
- Regular on-time attendance; plan ahead and arrange coverage for days off.
- Flexibility to work overtime and/or alternate shifts as needed.
- Must follow established safety procedures and coach others to do the same.
- Good communication and follow-up skills.
- Ability to work well with others, work under pressure, prioritize work, and multi-task.
- Ability to work 12-hour shifts involving standing, kneeling, climbing, and walking for 100% of on-the-job time.
- Ability to perform repeated twisting, bending, and reaching of upper and lower extremities.
- Ability to work in hot and/or humid environments, heights up to 30 feet, on ladders, in confined spaces, and on catwalks.
Working Conditions
- Work in all plant areas and outside the plant.
- Exposure to extreme heat and cold, humidity, fumes, gases, odors, and dust.
- Exposure to high noise levels.
- Work around moving machinery that is electrically and mechanically hazardous.
- Work with highly combustible or potentially explosive equipment and materials.

- Provide input into engineering designs, such as electrical or electronic systems changes, focusing on practicality and convenience.
