About the Role

This position is responsible for completing center and office repairs, maintenance, and new construction as needed at Inspire Development Centers, which provides Early Childhood Education (ECE) and social services to over 4,000 children across more than 25 Child Development Centers (CDC) in Washington State. The role requires basic carpentry, electrical, and plumbing skills to perform repairs and communicate effectively with vendors and Center Managers regarding maintenance needs.

Inspire operates under various federal and state-funded programs, including Regional Head Start (RHS), Migrant Seasonal Head Start (MSHS), Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program (ECEAP), and Early Head Start (EHS). The agency must meet an annual quota of non-federal share (in-kind) funds. Many children’s first language is Spanish.

Supervisory and Other Relationships

The position reports to the Maintenance Supervisor and works closely with the Transportation & Facilities Manager.

Responsibilities

• Design, construct, remodel, retrofit, and repair interior and exterior structures made of wood, drywall, plaster, concrete, or brick.
• Construct, repair, and retrofit exterior play structures, playground landscaping, and related items.
• Build and repair ramps, stairs, fences, floors, windows, roofs, interior/exterior walls, exterior modular skirting, and other related structures.
• Perform minor electrical repairs, including light fixtures, switches, and receptacles.
• Install, replace, and repair plumbing fixtures, such as sinks, faucets, toilets, water lines, drains, and sewer lines.
• Assist in estimating material and labor needs for projects and provide basic scaled work drawings for building permits.
• Collaborate with subcontractors and coworkers on job-related tasks.
• Communicate with suppliers and vendors to purchase construction materials.
• Attend staff meetings, workshops, trainings, classes, and seminars to further professional growth.
• Maintain confidentiality of program, vendor, contractor, and client-related information.
• Perform all other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Requirements

• Ability to read, write, and communicate in English and/or Spanish.
• Three (3) years of experience in carpentry and plumbing.
• Working knowledge of Uniform Building Codes (UBC) and background in maintenance, cleaning, and repair procedures.
• Experience in construction and/or facilities maintenance.
• Familiarity with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act (WISHA), and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) regulations.
• Understanding of federal construction initiatives.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
• Ability to understand and follow written and oral directions with minimal supervision.
• Ability to learn new tasks quickly and handle multiple tasks simultaneously while meeting deadlines.
• Ability to gather and analyze data for reports using multiple methods.
• Ability to read, write, and interpret blueprints and documentation.
• Strong customer service focus and ability to work with a culturally diverse employee population.
• Proficiency with personal computers, including Microsoft Office.
• Previous Head Start experience (preferred).
• English/Spanish bilingual fluency (preferred).

Qualifications

• Valid Washington State driver’s license.
• Annual driving abstract and acceptable driving history.
• Proof of automobile insurance.
• Ability to travel for job duties and responsibilities.
• Pass initial and periodic criminal and background checks.
• Pass initial and periodic employee health clearance (within 45 days of employment).
• Current First Aid/CPR cards (obtain within 30 days of employment).
• Initial and periodic TB screen.
• HIV/AIDS training (obtain within 30 days of employment).
• Bloodborne Pathogen training (obtain within 30 days of employment).
• Subject to random drug screening.
• Must sign a Confidentiality Agreement and annual Conflict of Interest Disclosure Statement.

Work Environment

Job sites are typically located at Inspire Development Centers’ Child Development Centers or offices. Work is often performed outdoors in varying weather conditions, including excessive heat, cold, wind, and rain. Tasks may involve uneven terrain, heights, or confined spaces.

• Ability to handle hazardous materials safely and tolerate minor electrical hazards.
• Ability to safely handle environmental hazards such as molds and solvents.

• Frequent local and statewide travel.

• Vision abilities include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
• Exposure to variable temperatures and noise levels ranging from quiet to very noisy.
