Maintenance Foreman

About the role

The University of Louisiana at Lafayette New Iberia Research Center (NIRC) is seeking a Maintenance Foreman to join its Facilities Management Department. This position oversees a team of skilled journeyman crafts and their helpers engaged in maintenance, construction, and repair work throughout the facility.

Responsibilities

• Inspect buildings, grounds, and equipment to determine the need for repairs or maintenance work.
• Review work in progress and upon completion to ensure compliance with safety, quality, and performance standards.
• Estimate labor and material costs; requisition necessary supplies, tools, and equipment for maintenance projects.
• Create sketches or layouts for proposed building renovations or maintenance modifications.
• Assign maintenance staff and crews to perform a variety of construction, repair, and upkeep duties.
• Supervise journeyman-level work across multiple trades, including carpentry, electrical, plumbing, plastering, and painting.
• Oversee the servicing and repair of mechanical and facility-related equipment (e.g., lawn mowers, stoves, hot water systems, and refrigeration units).
• Maintain accurate time, work, and maintenance reports for management review.
• Evaluate staff performance, approve leave requests, and monitor attendance and productivity.
• Ensure compliance with safety regulations, preventive maintenance schedules, and institutional policies.
• Provide technical direction and guidance to maintenance personnel to ensure work efficiency and adherence to procedures.
• Collaborate with department leadership to coordinate preventive and corrective maintenance activities across facilities.

Qualifications

• Two years of the required experience for the following minimum qualifications must have been on-the-job experience:
• Four years of experience or training in the building construction trades, building maintenance, maintenance or repair of mechanical equipment, or park operations and grounds maintenance;
• OR Completion of a two-year vocational technical program in general building construction, construction technology, or engineering plus two years of experience in the building construction trades, building maintenance, maintenance or repair of mechanical equipment, or park operations and grounds maintenance;
• OR Twelve semester hours in construction management, construction technology, or engineering, or any combination of these courses plus two years of experience in the building construction trades, building maintenance, maintenance or repair of mechanical equipment, or park operations and grounds maintenance.
