Job Summary
The Maintenance Engineer provides mechanical technical support for maintenance and reliability activities, designs concepts, and manages maintenance-focused initiatives. They are responsible for near-term and long-term maintenance support on fixed equipment, rotating equipment, I&E, and piping systems. The Maintenance Engineer also develops and leads maintenance projects and initiatives.
Essential Functions
- Supports day-to-day performance of equipment to ensure safe operations and meet regulatory, commercial, and logistical requirements.
- Diagnoses, repairs, and supports testing of mechanical, electrical, rotating equipment, and hydraulic issues.
- Leads mechanical field changes and through the MOC (management of change) process for capital and maintenance projects.
- Provides engineering support for equipment and piping changes.
- Improves fixed and rotating equipment asset availability, criticality assessment, PM development, and utilization.
- Identify opportunities for improvement (proactively and reactively).
- Inspects field equipment installations according to the design and fabricator’s specifications during unit outages and upgrades.
- Work with process engineering, maintenance, and operations personnel to troubleshoot failures and provide feedback on RCA's (root cause analysis) reports.
- Work with vendors, licensors, and contractors to support debottlenecking, optimization, and troubleshooting as needed to maintain safe and reliable operations.
- Provide support during unit commissioning, startups, and shutdowns.
- Daily interaction and communication with maintenance supervisors and the reliability team as well as maintenance and operations staff.
- Provide after-hours support when appropriate – emergency call out, etc.
- Help develop justification and work scope for T/A and maintenance.
- Support T/A with potential extended work schedules and/or night shifts as appropriate.
- Lead and manage small to medium reliability initiatives.
- Lead and participate in the MOC process and participate in hazard reviews (What-Ifs, HAZOPs) and troubleshooting.
- Lead and/or support investigations for mechanical related near misses and incidents.
- Maintain current work lists with priorities.
Required Skills/Abilities
- Strong interpersonal skills and extremely resourceful.
- Proven ability to provide mechanical engineering support for capital & maintenance projects.
- Familiarity with applicable health and safety regulations.
- Strong technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and to delegate them when appropriate.
- Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite of products.
Education And Experience
- BS Mechanical Engineering degree.
- A minimum of 3 years of mechanical engineering operations support experience in petrochemical, refining, and/or renewable fuels processing.
- Experience with industry standard project management practices.
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Prolonged periods of standing and/or walking.
- Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds.
- Ability to perform repetitive movements over long periods of time.
- Ability to work in confined spaces and wear self-contained breathing apparatus.
- Must be able to climb ladders and/or stairs on tanks, vessels and structures; wear respirator; work around equipment containing high pressures and temperatures and various chemicals.
