Maintenance Chief-Lewistown

About the role

The Maintenance Chief position is responsible for overseeing maintenance activities in the Lewistown Maintenance Division, including long-range planning, program management, and the development and implementation of new technologies and methods.

Responsibilities

• Administer roadway improvement, repair, and maintenance;
• Regulatory/permitting;
• Automated road monitoring;
• Winter maintenance;
• Facilities management;
• Equipment;
• Disaster and emergency response;
• Homeland security;
• Secondary road acquisition and management;
• Federal cost-sharing;
• Inspection;
• Hazardous materials;
• Public involvement;
• Engineering project planning and review;
• Land acquisition and management;
• Contract administration;
• Environmental programs and activities in the assigned district.

Requirements

• Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in highway maintenance and construction;
• Minimum of three (3) years of supervision;
• Knowledge of concepts and theories of highway maintenance, construction, materials engineering, mathematics, and the physical sciences;
• Knowledge of county, state, and federal regulations, policies, and specifications;
• Knowledge of Montana Materials Manual;
• Knowledge of incident command, bridge and structural surveillance and threat assessment;
• Knowledge of contract administration, public relations, personnel training, organizational theory, collective bargaining and union contract agreements, state and federal employment law, and State Personnel and MDT policies;
• Knowledge of civil rights and disadvantaged business enterprise laws, regulations, and programs;
• Knowledge of environmental law and related processes;
• Knowledge of right-of-way programs and policies;
• Knowledge of safety regulations and OSHA and state workplace safety standards;
• Skills in communication, project implementation, developing and administering functions, and translating technical data;
• Extensive knowledge of safety practices and procedures;
• Ability to make significant decisions affecting public health and safety in critical situations.

Qualifications

• Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Engineering Technology, Construction Technology, Business Administration or related field;
• Experience: Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in highway maintenance and construction, including experience with maintenance, materials, bridge and road construction, construction project and contract management, and three (3) years of supervision.

Schedule

Predominant work involves extensive travel throughout the state (in excess of 25,000 miles annually) to attend meetings, provide project oversight, and perform related fieldwork as required. Travel demands often involve overnight stays up to several nights in duration.

Pay

Salary range is $76,000 - $95,000 per year, commensurate with experience.

• Compliance with Mont. Admin. R. 2.6.201, "State Vehicle Use," and MDT Policy #6.03.001, "State Vehicle Use Policy" are conditions of employment.
