Maintenance Assistant

About the role

This position is located at Trout Lake and performs maintenance and rehabilitation work on infrastructure including buildings, recreation facilities, bridges, dams, access roads, trails, boundary lines, and Wildlife Management Areas. The position also performs maintenance and minor repairs to vehicles and equipment in support of the maintenance and rehabilitation work.

The selected candidate will be required to perform moderate to heavy labor, transport and operate heavy equipment, haul construction materials, and work effectively and safely in a variety of outdoor weather conditions while following established standards and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and rehabilitate buildings, recreation facilities, bridges, dams, access roads, trails, boundary lines, and Wildlife Management Areas.
  • Perform maintenance and minor repairs to vehicles and equipment.
  • Operate heavy equipment, including large tractors, mowers, and heavy construction equipment.
  • Lift and move objects up to 80 pounds.
  • Climb ladders and work at heights.
  • Work in remote areas and negotiate difficult terrain.
  • Work in adverse weather conditions.
  • Respond to emergencies, including after-hours emergencies.
  • Adhere to the Department’s Vehicle Policy and use a state vehicle.
  • Use personal protection equipment, including a respirator, as required.
  • Comply with the Federal Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act (OTETA) of 1991 for drug and alcohol testing.

Requirements

  • Two years of full-time experience in maintenance or mechanical work under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson; OR
  • Completion of an appropriate two-year technical school course at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services, such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association-Partnership (NYS CSEA-P) Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program*; OR
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of appropriate technical courses at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services.

Successful completion of the NYS CSEA-P Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work.

  • Must obtain a Class B CDL within 12 months of appointment with appropriate endorsements and no airbrake restriction.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.

Additional Information

This is an hourly appointment currently funded through 3/31/2027, with a likelihood of continuing beyond that date. Program needs and funding will determine the actual termination date.

  • Actual work schedule, duties, and travel requirements may vary and will be discussed at the interview.
  • Overtime may be required.
  • Overnight travel may be required.
  • Weekends and holidays may be required.
  • Must be available for emergency response.
