Job Description

The Dining Services Maintainer supports Amherst College Dining Services by maintaining safe, clean, orderly, and sanitary conditions across dining facilities, including common areas, restrooms, and dining-specific spaces.

Summary Of Responsibilities

• Custodial Services & Sanitation
• Performs general custodial duties to maintain safe, clean, orderly, and sanitary conditions in dining areas, restrooms, and adjacent service spaces.
• Cleans and disinfects high-touch surfaces, restrooms, dining areas, floors, and equipment in accordance with established procedures and health standards.
• Manages waste removal, including trash, recycling, and compost, following proper handling and disposal procedures.
• Maintains compliance with environmental health and safety standards, including proper use and handling of cleaning chemicals.
• Facility Stewardship & Monitoring
• Serves as a steward of Dining Services spaces by routinely inspecting areas for cleanliness, safety, and maintenance needs.
• Identifies and reports facility, equipment, or safety concerns promptly and accurately.
• Supports supply inventory by monitoring stock levels of cleaning materials and restroom supplies.
• Promotes energy awareness by monitoring lighting and equipment use where appropriate.
• Operational & Event Support
• Supports dining operations during service by responding to spills, hazards, and immediate cleaning needs.
• Aids in setup, breakdown, and general upkeep of dining and event spaces as needed.
• Provides support for special events and high-volume service periods.
• Teamwork, Communication & Inclusion
• Communicates effectively with supervisors and team members regarding operational needs and priorities.
• Works collaboratively with Dining Services and campus partners to support daily operations.
• Supports a diverse workforce and contributes to a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment.
• Safety & Compliance
• Fulfills safety procedures, including proper use of cleaning chemicals, equipment, and personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Maintains awareness of food safety and allergen protocols within dining environments.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• 1 to 3 years of related experience.
• Ability to work efficiently in a high-traffic, fast-paced environment.
• Basic knowledge of custodial or cleaning practices, or willingness to learn.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and safety procedures.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining sanitation standards.
• Effective communication, organizational, and time management skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
• Commitment to working with a diverse and inclusive community.
• Ability to safely handle cleaning chemicals and equipment.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and extended shifts.
• Successful completion of required reference and background checks.
• Successful completion of pre-employment physical and lift test.

Preferred

• Previous custodial or cleaning experience, preferably in a high-volume or institutional setting.
• Familiarity with cleaning equipment, sanitation standards, and environmental health and safety practices.
• Experience supporting events or working in multi-use facilities.
• Experience working in a team-oriented and diverse environment.
