About the Role
The Civil Superintendent plays a critical leadership and subject-matter-expert role in the engineering, procurement, and construction of civil components for industrial construction projects. This position assists with construction planning, procurement, scheduling, and overseeing civil construction activities. It may involve managing a large civil workforce, supporting staff, and having budgetary responsibilities for the department.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate with engineering on design and construction planning.
- Partner with procurement to ensure proper equipment/material are ordered, received on time, and meet specifications.
- Manage field construction, maintenance, engineering, and other field project support activities.
- Supervise the development of project schedules and monitor production to ensure timely completion.
- Review cost reports and perform analysis to reduce costs and maintain productivity.
- Establish project labor requirements and review them with district and/or divisional management.
- Conduct regular project inspections and advise supervision on work progress, quality, and safety conditions.
- Coordinate work with subcontractors to ensure compliance with project scope and specifications.
- Administer project policies and procedures to subcontractors.
- Coordinate with engineers, inspectors, and client/owner representatives to isolate and solve project problems.
- Conduct regular safety meetings and address areas requiring attention.
- Monitor projects to ensure adherence to company and regulatory procedures.
- Oversee project purchasing activities to ensure quality material, timely delivery, and competitive costs.
- Determine the necessity of construction equipment and ensure proper maintenance.
Requirements
- Demonstrated experience working on industrial civil projects and as a subject-matter expert for civil construction components.
- Proven experience leading and managing large teams to success.
- Ability to manage a budget.
- Capability to read and manage construction activity to a schedule and advance work packages.
- Excellent communication skills with employees, peers, supervisors, customer representatives, and executive stakeholders.
- Proficiency in IT tools, including MS Office applications, scheduling software, and ability to learn other company applications.
- Must align with the company’s core values and vision and demonstrate cultural fit.
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally.
- Ability to relocate or temporarily relocate to the project area during construction activity.
Preferred Qualifications
- Formal or vocational education in a relevant field.
- Certifications relevant to civil construction.
- Former or current employee of Zachry Group.
Physical Demands
- Extensive standing, walking, bending, squatting, and lifting.
- Use of arms and hands to signal, grab, hold, turn, push, and pull objects, materials, controls, and tools.
- May be required to lift, carry, and move up to 50 lbs.
- Occasional work at heights, climbing ladders and stairways, and working off platforms.
- Use of vision abilities to focus, see short and long distances, colors, depth perception, and peripheral vision.
- Required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE), including hard hat, safety glasses/goggles, ear plugs/muffs, masks/respirators, safety vests, gloves, and steel-toe boots.
Work Environment
- Work in all-weather climates, including wind, rain, and snow.
- Work at elevations of +/- 6000 feet above sea level, with frequent snow, sand, and dust clouds.
- Moderate to high noise levels.
- Job sites contain light to heavy equipment vehicles, small to large equipment, materials, communication equipment, and tools.
- Environment includes people standing, walking, sitting, signaling, and talking, as well as bells, whistles, and alarms.
