Mainframe Engineer

Location: Vienna, VA (Hybrid)
Duration: Initial 6-month contract with possible extensions
Work Requirements: US Citizen, GC Holders, or authorized to work in the U.S.

About the role

We are seeking a Mainframe Engineer with a strong ability to investigate operational, technical, and business problems; analyze requirements; and recommend reliable automation solutions. This role involves clear communication of complex system and automation information to technical teams, business partners, and upper management.

Responsibilities

• Lead, guide, and mentor others while promoting technical best practices, process improvement, and operational efficiency.
• Administer, configure, and maintain IBM System Automation for z/OS, including policy development, managed resource automation, automation definitions, resource dependency models, and SA policy database maintenance.
• Develop enterprise automation solutions using advanced REXX programming, including command processors, automation routines, operational tooling, and automation scripts.
• Design, implement, and support automation for IBM NetView, including automation tables, message automation, command lists, PIPEs, event processing, and policy-driven automation components.
• Develop and support automation across z/OS subsystems and middleware platforms such as CICS, Db2, IMS, JES2/JES3, MQ, and TCP/IP.
• Create automation for CICS availability, recovery, startup, shutdown, restart, and health monitoring.
• Apply knowledge of Parallel Sysplex environments, cross-system automation concepts, JCL, SDSF, TSO/ISPF, and z/OS operations.
• Implement and manage IBM Workload Scheduler, including IWS, TWS, ZWS, and workload automation processes.
• Automate processes involving z/OS UNIX System Services (USS/OMVS), including UNIX processes and shell scripting.
• Integrate automation with monitoring and event management tools such as IBM OMEGAMON, ServiceNow, and Moogsoft.
• Manage, monitor, and support mainframe and/or distributed systems, business applications, and infrastructure platforms.
• Identify and implement automation opportunities across IBM z/Series, UNIX, and Windows operating systems.
• Support high-availability, recovery, restart, and self-healing automation solutions.
• Reduce manual intervention, improve operational reliability, and deliver scalable automation solutions that support business services.
• Participate in an on-call rotation as required.

Qualifications

• Expert-level experience with IBM System Automation for z/OS.
• Advanced REXX programming experience.
• Strong experience with IBM NetView.
• Experience designing and supporting automation across z/OS subsystems and middleware platforms (CICS, Db2, IMS, JES2/JES3, MQ, TCP/IP).
• Experience with IBM Workload Scheduler (IWS, TWS, ZWS).
• Familiarity with z/OS UNIX System Services (USS/OMVS) and shell scripting.
• Experience integrating automation with tools such as IBM OMEGAMON, ServiceNow, and Moogsoft.
• Experience managing and monitoring mainframe and distributed systems.
• Proven ability to reduce manual intervention and improve operational reliability.

Desired Skills

• Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Current awareness of professional standards, innovations, and industry best practices.
• Experience with OMEGAMON situation development, alerting, and monitoring customization.
• Experience with GDPS and disaster recovery automation.
• Experience with SMP/E maintenance and z/OS system programming concepts.
• Familiarity with Ansible, REST APIs, and mainframe modernization technologies.
