Mainframe CICS Systems Engineer

Enterprise Technology & Services (ETS) delivers shared technology services for Morgan Stanley supporting all business applications and end users. ETS provides capabilities for all stages of Morgan Stanley's software development lifecycle, enabling productive coding, functional and integration testing, application releases, and ongoing monitoring and support for over 3,000 production applications. ETS also delivers all workplace technologies (desktop, mobile, voice, video, productivity, intranet/internet) in integrated configurations that boost the personal productivity of employees. The Enterprise Z organization (EZ) is a technology enabler for the business by providing a strong, resilient, and stable platform to host and enable business innovation and growth. EZ consists of experienced administration, operations, and engineering staff required to support the platform. The team works with the latest hardware and software technologies, including frequently refreshed IBM z platform and mainframe disk and tape technologies across datacenters.

About the Role

The Mainframe CICS Systems Programmer/Engineer is responsible for all phases of CICS engineering, system and software maintenance, and CICS-related operational functions. The candidate must be comfortable working with CICS in a 24x7 large-scale Sysplex and CICSPlex environment and must be able to interface with application developers and operations teams. On-call support and maintenance outside of normal working hours are required to resolve issues.

Responsibilities

• Perform all phases of CICS engineering, system, and software maintenance.
• Support CICS in a 24x7 large-scale Sysplex and CICSPlex environment.
• Interface with application developers and operations teams.
• Conduct CICS performance tuning, debugging, and dump analysis.
• Provide on-call support and maintenance outside of normal working hours.
• Implement and customize CICSPlex SM, including dynamic transaction routing.
• Analyze CICS SMF records using the CICS Performance Analyzer tool to gather statistics for tuning.
• Perform problem determination, dump analysis, and performance tuning.
• Support application developers with COBOL knowledge.
• Maintain and optimize CICS resource definitions, including those affecting region performance.
• Utilize CICS monitoring tools such as Sysview for CICS.

Requirements

• Knowledge of SMP/E, software upgrades, and maintenance.
• In-depth understanding of CICS parameters that control performance in a CICSPlex environment.
• Experience with CICS SMF record structure and the CICS Performance Analyzer tool.
• Experience with CICSPlex SM implementation and customization.
• Knowledge of CICS resource definitions, particularly those related to performance.
• Experience with CICS monitoring tools such as Sysview for CICS.
• Ability to perform problem determination, dump analysis, and performance tuning.
• Knowledge of COBOL to support application developers.
• Experience with Mainframe WebSphere MQ.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Skills Desired

• Assembler, COBOL, and REXX coding, including knowledge of CICS Exits.
• Web application support in a CICS TS V6.x environment.
• Understanding of z/OS facilities such as APF, Linklist, VSAM, LPA, RLS, and Coupling Facility.
• Utilization of CICS Configuration Manager.
• Working knowledge of z/OS and CICS Explorer.
• Understanding of CICS REST Services.
• Prior application programming experience.

Pay

• Cleveland, Ohio: $110,000 – $165,000 per year.
• Colorado: $125,000 – $175,000 per year.
• Illinois: $135,000 – $195,000 per year.
• Maine: $125,000 – $175,000 per year.
• Maryland: $140,000 – $195,000 per year.
• Massachusetts: $135,000 – $195,000 per year.
• Minnesota: $125,000 – $175,000 per year.
• Vermont: $125,000 – $175,000 per year.
• Virginia: $135,000 – $195,000 per year.
• Washington: $155,000 – $215,000 per year.

Base pay is determined on an individualized basis and is only part of the total compensation package, which may also include commission earnings, incentive compensation, discretionary bonuses, and other short- and long-term incentive packages.
