About the role
The Office of the State Controller (SCO) is California’s chief fiscal office, ensuring accountability, transparency, and fairness in the state’s financial practices. The Disbursements Division (DISB) processes payments for State employees, retirees, vendors, and state programs, playing a critical role in maintaining California’s financial operations.
This position operates under general direction from a Mailing Machines Supervisor I and II, handling complex, multi-function equipment to process large volumes of outgoing mail for the United States Postal Service (USPS) and other carriers. The role requires lifting and moving up to 50 lb. boxes without assistance and maneuvering full mail cages weighing approximately 1,000 lbs. daily.
Responsibilities
- Operate complex multi-function computerized inserting machines, including folding, inserting, and sealing documents.
- Clear jams from mailing equipment and detect material handling errors.
- Perform maintenance and minor repairs on mailing equipment.
- Review work orders and documentation to ensure compliance with specifications, postal regulations, and mailing schedules.
- Conduct quality control of processed work.
- Operate presort machines for ZIP Code sorting, remove sorted envelopes from bins, and place them in appropriate mail trays with correct tags.
- Secure completed mail trays on strapping machines.
- Prepare postage reports for electronic submission to the USPS using a desktop PC.
- Set up, adjust, and operate metering machines, joggers, cutters, shrink-wrap, and tying machines.
- Operate warehouse equipment (e.g., forklift, pallet jack) to transport supplies/materials safely, adhering to the Injury and Illness Prevention Program and certified training guidelines.

- Eligibility for the Mailing Machines Operator II Examination (required for application).
Pay
$3,994.00 - $4,992.00 per month. New to State candidates will be hired at the minimum salary of the classification or the minimum of the alternate range, if applicable.
