About the role

Positions in this class perform a full range of duties such as plumbing, carpentry, remodeling painting and a variety of other craft or building trades working in the installation, maintenance and repair of City buildings, parks and marina facilities and related structures and equipment.

Responsibilities

• Perform a full range of duties such as plumbing, carpentry, remodeling painting and a variety of other craft or building trades working in the installation, maintenance and repair of City buildings, parks and marina facilities and related structures and equipment.
• Work in rough and finish carpentry, cabinetry, and wood finishing.
• Operate and maintain specialized tools used in carpentry, plumbing, and related building trades.
• Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Estimate necessary materials and equipment to complete assignments.
• Exercise independent judgment and initiative without close supervision.
• Prepare basic records and reports.
• Read and interpret manuals, specifications, drawings and blueprints.
• Shop mathematics.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of the work.

Requirements

• Equivalent to graduation from high school and four (4) years experience in commercial building maintenance work which includes substantial carpentry and plumbing duties.
• Completion of a state approved construction or building trade apprenticeship program.
• Possession of HVAC or Playground Safety Inspector certificate is highly desirable.

Qualifications

• Possession of a valid California driver's license and a satisfactory driving record.
• Sufficient strength and stamina to lift and carry objects weighing up to 80 pounds.
• Willingness to work evening and weekend shifts.
• Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
• Willingness to work with exposure to unpleasant and potentially hazardous substances.

Skills

• Knowledge of principles, methods, materials, tools and equipment used in rough and finish carpentry, cabinetry, and wood finishing.
• Knowledge of principles and techniques of water and wastewater supply, drainage, steam and condensate plumbing, using galvanized, copper, black iron and PVC pipe, including boiler and HVAC maintenance.
• Knowledge of techniques and safety precautions in acetylene and arc welding and in sweating copper pipe.
• Knowledge of surface preparation and application of paints appropriate to different internal and external surfaces.
• Knowledge of methods and materials used in concrete work, surface patching, and brick and masonry repair.
• Knowledge of operation and maintenance of a wide variety of hand, power and shop tools and equipment common to the fields of plumbing, carpentry, and related building trades.
• Knowledge of safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to the work.
• Ability to operate and maintain specialized tools used in carpentry, plumbing, and related building trades.
• Ability to operate and maintain acetylene and arc welding and brazing equipment.
• Ability to measure and calculate angles, lengths, and volumes.
• Ability to design, lay out and prepare sketches for carpentry and related construction jobs.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to estimate necessary materials and equipment to complete assignments.
• Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative without close supervision.
• Ability to prepare basic records and reports.
• Ability to read and interpret manuals, specifications, drawings and blueprints.
• Ability to shop mathematics.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of the work.
• Ability to operate a desktop computer.
