Machinist Mechanic

About the role

Maintain close tolerances, dismantle and assemble machines, select, set up, and operate various metalworking machines, perform emergency production tooling, gauge and disassemble bearings, and join the local UAW union.

Responsibilities

  • Receive assignments from supervisors detailing machine locations and diagnosed issues.
  • Remove defective or worn parts at machine locations or disassemble machines in the Machine Shop when general overhauls are needed with helper assistance.
  • Repair/replace internal components of Heat Treat Furnace equipment, including internal and external load/unload systems and internal cell maintenance/repair.
  • Determine extent of repairs required to restore machines to first-class operating condition; decide whether parts need to be repaired or replaced.
  • Select required materials per supervisor's requisitions; secure fixtures and tools needed to set up metalworking machines to machine new parts or repair worn parts to specifications.
  • Form and sharpen tools required for processing parts according to specified requirements.
  • Work with engineering and operators to set speeds and feeds according to material size, operation, stock removal, and finish requirements.
  • Position tools in holders, work in fixtures, start machines, and manually feed tools to workpieces.
  • Measure dimensions of work at intervals to ensure metal is being removed according to specified dimensions and tolerances using varied measuring devices.
  • Reassemble machines and test repair accuracy by observing starting, running, and stopping cycles.
  • Remove, repair, or replace machine-mounted pumps.
  • Make and install special equipment or arrange special adaptations in production machines per instructions and specifications prepared by the Engineering Department.
  • Perform electric arc welding (MIG, TIG, Stick), plumbing, etc., as part of machine repair/modification.
  • Work in conjunction with outside machine repair technicians to resolve machine issues.
  • Clean and lubricate machines after each use.
  • Hand scrape machine ways.
  • Clean and maintain personal work areas as well as the department.
  • Support other initiatives as follows: dedicated, full-time hourly resources responsible for a specific area, driver of lean manufacturing initiatives (pillars), and a leader of cultural change.
  • Train and facilitate for continuous improvement activities within their area.
  • Perform audits on achievements to verify and ensure sustainability.
  • Develop and implement recognition programs for an area's achievements.

Requirements

Physical Demands: Stooping, climbing, lifting, walking, using hoists, rollers, hand trucks, climbing up and down ladders, aerial platforms, accessing confined spaces, etc. Working Conditions: Inside and outside. Uncontrollable Hazards: Surface cuts possible while handling parts and equipment. Safety of Others: Standard. Pertinent safety equipment: Hearing protection, safety glasses, gloves, respiratory protection, etc.

Qualifications

Must have a high school diploma or equivalent. Must have a minimum of 2 years of experience in a similar position. Must have a valid driver's license. Must be able to pass a drug test. Must be able to read, write, and communicate effectively in English. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.

Skills

Skilled in metalworking, machining, and repairing production machines. Proficient in using precision measuring and gauging equipment. Knowledgeable in emergency production tooling and bearing disassembly. Familiar with heat treat furnace equipment and internal cell maintenance/repair. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Strong problem-solving skills. Ability to follow detailed instructions and work with precision.

Pay

$37.24 per hour.
