Machinist (Locomotive Shop)

Responsibilities

  • Fits and assembles parts into complete assembly.
  • Verifies dimensions and alignment of assembly.
  • Installs machined replacement parts in mechanisms, machines, and equipment, and tests operation of units to ensure functionality and performance.
  • Operates welding equipment to cut or weld parts.
  • Performs mechanical inspection on locomotives and repairs defects to conform to FRA regulations.
  • Tests locomotives for performance by use of load box.
  • Replaces brake shoes on locomotives.
  • Disassembles and rebuilds locomotive trucks and replaces wheel sets and traction motors.
  • Repairs and rebuilds diesel engines, air compressors, and many other locomotive components.
  • Disassembles and reassembles locomotives and machinery.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma/GED and One year certificate from college or technical school; or 4 years heavy mechanical repair experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience reading blueprints.

Reasoning Abilities

  • Problem solving and trouble shooting skills.
  • Mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Physical Demands

  • Regularly stands, walks, uses hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls, and reaches with hands and arms.
  • Occasionally climbs or balances, stoops, bends, kneels, crouches, or crawls, and talks or hears.
  • Regularly lifts and/or moves up to 70 pounds.
  • Regularly works near moving mechanical parts, occasionally works in outside weather conditions, occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, and occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock.
  • Exposure to equipment that intensifies the heat factor on an occasional basis.
