About the role

Machines and fabricates prototype and replacement parts for equipment, machines, and weapon systems of various types and alloys. Makes repairs to machinery, mechanical equipment, and/or optical equipment. Interprets verbal and written instructions and specifications; plans and lays out work using a variety of machinist's hand tools and precision measuring instruments.

Uses various design software such as Computer Numerical Control (CNC) and Computer-aided Manufacturing (CAM) software to model cutting paths and program tool changers. Programs, sets up, and operates manual and CNC machine tools; machines and shapes metal parts to close tolerances; makes standard shop computations relating to dimensions of work, tooling, feeds, and speeds of machining.

Demonstrates knowledge of the working properties of common metals; selects standard materials, parts, and equipment required for this work; fits and assembles parts into mechanical equipment and machines; and makes all necessary adjustments to complete repairs. Programs mills and lathes by entering instructions, including zero and reference points; setting tool registers, offsets, compensation, and conditional switches; calculating requirements, including basic math, geometry, and trigonometry; proving part programs.

Collaborates with design engineers and customers to understand requirements, help design and develop solutions, and recommend courses of action. Performs quality control inspections and other duties as required to complete the assigned mission. Shares work progress and information with fellow machinists. Assists with mentoring junior machinists. This position is covered under the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Responsibilities

• Interpret blueprints and complex multi-view drawings
• Design 3D parts using CAD software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, etc.)
• Use CAM software to program CNC machines (MasterCam, CAMWorks, etc.)
• Work with G-Code, GBR, STL, and STEP files; make adjustments to G-code for CNC machining
• Program, set up, and operate manual and CNC equipment such as mills, lathes, and plasma tables
• Select tools required to cut particular materials and program machines accordingly
• Operate and use precision measuring instruments common to the trade
• Perform final quality checks on finished products to ensure conformance to specifications
• Maintain quality and safety standards; keep records; maintain equipment and supplies
• Work with tolerances down to 0.001”
• Heat treat alloys to customer specifications
• Use Rockwell hardness tester

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent
• One of the following:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field and 5 years machine shop experience
  • Two years Machinist Technical school degree and 10 years’ experience as a machine shop equipment operator
  • 12 years’ experience working in a machine shop environment, including working with CNC machines
• Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English
• Well-mannered customer service attitude
• Willingness to cross-train in other areas
• Ability and willingness to work overtime, weekends, holidays, and shifts as needed, sometimes on short notice
• Valid driver’s license without special restrictions
• Dependable transportation and means of communication
• U.S. citizenship
• Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance
• Current TRAX employee or affiliate subcontractor for internal postings

Skills

• Experience with CAD software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, etc.)
• Experience with CAM software (MasterCam, CAMWorks, etc.)
• Knowledge of G-Code, GBR, STL, and STEP files
• Ability to program, set up, and operate manual and CNC equipment (mills, lathes, plasma tables)
• Experience with precision measuring instruments
• Knowledge of heat treating alloys
• Background in welding (desirable)
• Mechanical and structural engineering background (desirable)

Physical Requirements

• Pass pre-employment drug screening and physical, including periodic retests
• Wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for assigned tasks
• Capable of working in extreme weather conditions, including summer temperatures peaking around 120°F
• Capable of lifting 100 lbs unassisted
• Capable of working in outdoor weather conditions
• Capable of frequent squatting, crouching, stooping, kneeling, bending, and standing
• Meet physical requirements for operations in Welding, ELMO, and Transducers Departments

Pay

$38.69 per hour
