Job Description
Machines / fabricates prototype and replacement parts for equipment, machines and weapon systems of various types and alloys. Makes repairs to machinery, mechanical equipment and/or optical equipment. Interprets verbal and written instructions and specifications; planning and laying out of work, using a variety of machinist's hand tools and precision measuring instruments. Uses various design software such as Computer Numerical Control (CNC) and Computer-aided Manufacturing (CAM) software to model cutting paths and program tool changers. Programs, sets up and operates manual and CNC machine tools; machines and shapes metal parts to close tolerances; makes standard shop computations relating to dimensions of work, tooling, feeds, and speeds of machining. Demonstrates knowledge of the working properties of the common metals; selects standard materials, parts, and equipment required for this work; and fitting and assembling parts into mechanical equipment and machines; and making all necessary adjustments to complete repairs. Programs mills and lathes by entering instructions, including zero and reference points; setting tool registers, offsets, compensation, and conditional switches; calculating requirements, including basic math, geometry, and trigonometry; proving part programs; maintaining quality and safety standards; keeping records; maintaining equipment and supplies. Provides iterative feedback to customers. Shares work progress and information with fellow machinists. Performs other duties as required to complete the assigned mission.
Qualifications
- Pay Rate: $37.07
- Education/Licenses/Certifications/Experience Requirements: Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent. Must have one of the following, Two years machinist Technical school degree and 7 years’ experience as a machine shop equipment operator or 9 years’ experience working in a machine shop environment with CNC machines.
Job Skills Requirements
- Must have the ability and understanding to read blueprints and interpret complex multi-view drawings.
- Must have experience designing 3D parts using CAD software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, etc.).
- Must have experience with CAM software to program CNC machines (MasterCam, CAMWorks, etc.).
- Must have knowledge of G-Code, GBR, STL, and STEP files
- Must know how to make changes to G-code to make small adjustments in CNC machining process.
- Must be able to program, set-up and operate manual and CNC equipment such as mills, lathes and plasma tables.
- Must be able to consider tools required to cut particular materials and program machines accordingly.
- Must have work experience operating and using precision measuring instruments common to the trade.
Physical Requirements
- Must pass a pre-employment drug screening and physical and periodic retests.
- Must be able to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for work tasks assigned.
- Must be capable of working in extreme weather conditions including summer temperatures peaking around 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Must be capable of lifting 100lbs unassisted.
- Must be capable of working in outdoor weather conditions.
- Must be capable of frequent squatting, crouching, and stooping.
- Must be capable of kneeling, bending and standing while performing maintenance machinist duties.
- Must meet the physical requirements necessary to perform operations outlined, performed, and stated in the SOPs for Welding, ELMO and Transducers Departments.

Additional Desirable Qualifications
- Work with tolerances down to 0.001”.
- Background in welding
- Mechanical and structural engineering background.
- Knowledge and the ability to heat treat alloys to customer specifications.
- Experience using Rockwell hardness tester.
