About the role

Machinist/Programmer - Velocity is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Machinist to support our in-house machining operations. This hands-on role is responsible for programming, setup, operation, and continuous improvement of machining processes in support of our automotive restoration and customization projects.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop, test, and optimize CNC programs using CAD/CAM software (Fusion 360, Mastercam, etc.) to meet part specifications.
  • Program, set up, and operate a variety of machines including 5-axis CNCs, lathes, routers, lasers, and 3D printers.
  • Perform complex part setup and machining processes with an emphasis on precision, quality, and efficiency.
  • Manufacture one-off and production components to support vehicle builds, restorations, and special projects.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, CAD models, blueprints, and specifications.
  • Independently plan and prioritize workloads to meet production schedules and project deadlines.
  • Demonstrate strong self-motivation and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Manage machine utilization, setup efficiency, and task execution to maximize productivity.
  • Take ownership of assigned projects from programming through final inspection.
  • Proactively identify issues, communicate concerns, and recommend solutions to maintain workflow and quality standards.
  • Ensure all parts meet dimensional and aesthetic quality standards through inspection and testing.
  • Evaluate machining processes and tooling strategies; implement improvements to reduce cycle time, scrap, and rework.
  • Maintain documentation for CNC programs, tooling setups, and operational procedures to support repeatability and traceability.
  • Verify completed work for accuracy and compliance with engineering requirements before release to production.
  • Ensure proper usage, care, and routine maintenance of CNC equipment and tooling.
  • Troubleshoot machinery, tooling, and programming issues to minimize downtime.
  • Collaborate with engineers, designers, and production teams to support product development and manufacturability.
  • Communicate project status, challenges, and recommendations effectively with stakeholders.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives and contribute technical expertise to machining and manufacturing processes.

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Proficiency in CAD/CAM programming (Fusion 360, Mastercam, SolidWorks).
  • Strong command of G-code, M-code, and advanced machining strategies.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team while performing hands-on machining and programming work.
  • Excellent problem-solving, troubleshooting, and decision-making skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively across departments.
  • High attention to detail, craftsmanship, and pride in work.
  • Experience with a range of materials including aluminum, steel, plastics, and composites.

Education Background and Experience

  • High school diploma or GED required; associate degree or certification in CNC Programming, Machining, or related field preferred.
  • 5+ years of CNC machining and programming experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience in a fast-paced, high-quality automotive or manufacturing environment is strongly preferred.

Physical Demands

  • Prolonged periods of standing or walking around the workspace.
  • Frequently lifting heavy objects, such as tools, parts, or equipment, often weighing up to 50-75 pounds.
  • Regularly bending, stooping, or crouching to work on vehicles at different heights.
  • Moving large or heavy equipment, carts, or vehicles within the shop.
  • Precise manipulation of tools, small parts, and diagnostic equipment.
  • Continuous use of hands, arms, and fingers for tasks like tightening bolts, sanding, or painting.
  • Exposure to loud noises from power tools and machinery.
  • Exposure to dust, fumes, and chemicals like solvents, oils, and paints.
  • Using equipment like impact wrenches or sanders that produce significant vibration.
  • Working in non-climate-controlled environments, leading to exposure to heat or cold.
  • Potential exposure to sharp tools, heavy objects, or moving vehicles.
  • Safely operate a motor vehicle.
