Machinist
Position Summary
This unique role works in a prototype machine shop environment and understands how to set up small or one-off custom part runs in an efficient manner. The Machinist will help us set up and operate a new 3 to 5 axis VMC and must have some experience with Mastercam, SolidCAM or similar. The machinist will also need some experience with Southwestern’s TRAK mill and lathes. The position applies GD&T, reads shop prints, interacts and communicates with engineers and scientists, and operates machinery and equipment in a safe manner.
Responsibilities
- Operate machinery and equipment in a safe manner
- Perform housekeeping tasks as necessary to maintain a clean and safe work area
- Notify supervisory personnel if a nonconforming condition is disclosed
- Perform tool proofing of first run jobs and give feedback to programming to ensure run efficiency and accuracy
- Understand and apply optimal workholding techniques
- Work with other operators as required to ensure optimum setup
- Analyze and solve manufacturing problems with a high level of skill
- Follow safety guidelines and procedures established by the company
- Calculate dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and instruments such as micrometers and/or calipers
- Identify nonconforming parts using precision measuring instruments
- Set tooling and apply offsets
- Using tooling and material data, calculate surface footage to machine components
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Must have a training school background plus 3 to 5 years in a prototype machine shop using manual machines, or 5 to 10 years in a prototype machine shop
- Experience setting up and operating a 3- to 5-axis VMC
- Experience with Mastercam, SolidCAM, or similar CAM software
- Experience with Southwestern’s TRAK mill and lathes
- Requires working knowledge of controls and instrumentation, conceptual skills, functional and technical skills, attention to detail, good verbal communication skills, and ability to use good judgment
- A strong understanding of GD&T and be able to read shop prints
- Able to interact and communicate with engineers and scientists
Physical Requirements
- Frequent use of computers with repetitive keyboard and mouse activity and manual dexterity
- Ability to operate hand and power tools for long periods
- Ability to regularly lift 20 pounds and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds
