Overview
The Machinist is responsible for the safe setup, operation, and maintenance of manual and/or CNC machine tools used to manufacture, repair, and modify components to required specifications. This position supports production objectives by performing machining operations, interpreting engineering drawings, maintaining quality standards, and promoting a safe and productive work environment.
Responsibilities
- Promote safety and maintain a clean, organized work environment at all times.
- Adhere to all company policies, procedures, goals, and initiatives.
- Operate manual and/or CNC machine tools to perform machining operations according to specifications.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, work instructions, and shop travelers.
- Perform basic to advanced mathematical and geometric calculations required for machining activities.
- Set up and secure workpieces, tooling, and fixtures safely and correctly.
- Monitor machining processes and make adjustments as necessary to maintain quality standards.
- Inspect finished work using precision measuring instruments including micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, depth micrometers, and other inspection tools.
- Complete required production, inspection, and quality documentation accurately.
- Perform routine maintenance and housekeeping on assigned equipment and work areas.
- Operate shop support equipment such as cranes, forklifts, grinders, drills, and other machinery as authorized.
- Assist with rigging, lifting, and movement of large components and castings safely.
- Identify tooling wear or equipment issues and communicate corrective actions.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to improve safety, quality, and productivity.
- Support training and knowledge sharing within the department as experience and skill level permit.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Education: High School Diploma or GED required. Technical training, vocational education, apprenticeship, or machining certification preferred.
- Experience: Previous machining experience in a manufacturing or machine shop environment preferred. Experience operating manual and/or CNC machine tools is preferred.
- Skills: Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications. Experience using precision measuring instruments. Experience with overhead cranes, rigging, and material handling equipment is a plus.
- Knowledge: Mechanical aptitude and attention to detail. Strong commitment to safety and quality. Ability to learn machining processes and equipment. Effective communication and teamwork skills. Ability to work independently and manage priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. Basic computer skills preferred.
