PURPOSE OF ROLE
The Machinist is responsible for operating machine tools to produce precision metal parts and components according to engineering specifications. They work with a variety of tools and equipment, such as lathes, milling machines, grinders, and computer-controlled machines, to fabricate parts for use in manufacturing and production processes.
Essential Functions
- Set up and operate machine tools to perform machining operations, such as turning, milling, drilling, grinding, and boring, to produce metal parts to required specifications
- Interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and technical specifications to determine machining requirements, dimensions, tolerances, and surface finishes
- Select appropriate cutting tools, fixtures, and materials for each job, and set up machines according to work instructions and safety guidelines
- Inspect machined parts using precision measuring instruments, such as micrometers, calipers, and gauges, to ensure conformance to specifications and quality standards
- Identify and troubleshoot issues with machine tools, tooling, or workpieces during the machining process, and make adjustments or repairs as needed to maintain quality and efficiency
- Perform routine maintenance tasks on machine tools, including cleaning, lubrication, and minor repairs, to ensure optimal performance and longevity
- Adhere to safety protocols and procedures at all times, including wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), following machine safety guidelines, and reporting safety hazards or concerns
- Maintain accurate records of machining operations, including job setups, tooling changes, production counts, and quality inspection results, in accordance with company policies and procedures
Qualifications and Experience
- Completion of a machining program or vocational training in machining techniques, CNC programming, blueprint reading, and precision measurement is highly beneficial
- Some employers may require candidates to have completed a formal machining program or apprenticeship
- Candidates should have practical experience in machining operations, including operating manual and CNC machine tools such as lathes, mills, grinders, and drills
