Machinist

About the Role

Operate and maintain a variety of machines including CNC turning and milling machines, lathes, mills, grinders, hole boring machines, gear hobbing and shaping machines, engraving, burnishing, lapping machines, and drill presses with accessory equipment. Perform tasks such as measuring and cutting raw materials, maintaining tooling and supply inventories, and treating parts with chemicals for surface finishing, including alodine/irridite touch-up. Conduct heat treatment operations for hardening, annealing, and stress relief.

Responsibilities

• Set up, maintain, and operate machines to produce parts from CNC programs, production routings, blueprints, and verbal/written instructions.
• Inspect first-run parts for compliance with dimensional tolerances and surface finishes; modify programs as needed.
• Run multiple machines and deburr parts during cycle time, performing in-process inspections as required.
• Perform drilling, pinning, reaming, counterboring, tapping, tumbling, sandblasting, vibratory finishing, and alodine/irridite touch-up operations.
• Adjust solutions to correct quality variations and prepare materials for surface treating.
• Maintain records, manage parts and paperwork for multiple jobs, and ensure proper identification and storage of raw materials.
• Fill raw material requisitions, repackage and store materials, and maintain inventory records.
• Set up and maintain tool department and inventory records; notify supervisor when minimum inventory levels are reached.

Skills

• Ability to perform duties with minimal supervision.
• Proficiency in setting up and using dimensional gauging and measurement equipment.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and process routings.
• Experience editing and modifying CNC programs.
• Knowledge of machine speed, feed, and CNC equipment operation.
• Ability to make and maintain complex setups.
• Proficiency with Mastercam and other software.
• Prior experience in metalworking machine operation.
• Ability to evaluate chemical solutions and materials, with knowledge of chemical properties and emergency procedures.
• Experience with sandblasting, tumbling machines, and polishing mediums.
• Good manual dexterity and ability to operate cutting equipment.
• Knowledge of raw materials, measurements, and shop math.
• New employees must attain satisfactory proficiency within three months.

Physical and Environmental Requirements

• Indoor work in an air-conditioned environment.
• Required to wear company-provided personal protection equipment.
• Exposure to cutting fluids, grease, oil, solvents, high-speed moving machinery, and sharp tools.
• Moderate noise levels, metal chips, and trimmings.
• Finger dexterity for operating controls and adjustments.
• Little heavy lifting; may require prolonged sitting or standing.
• Exposure to corrosive chemicals, fumes, polishing mediums, and cleaning/washing chemicals (PPE provided).
• Close manual and visual work, including use of optical aids like microscopes and magnifiers.
• Exposure to metal and abrasive tool dust.
