Responsibilities

  • Perform diversified semi-skilled machining operations, including setup, adjustment, and operation of a wide variety of machining equipment to produce close-tolerance parts adhering to print specifications.
  • Read and interpret complex drawings, charts, instructions, and diagrams.
  • Provide instruction and training to new and experienced employees to develop skills and produce parts to specifications.
  • Set up, adjust, and operate machining equipment for a variety of parts to close tolerances, including selecting feeds, speeds, and operational sequences, calculating ratios, and programming machining instructions.
  • Load/unload parts, cycle machines, and run designated quantities for production.
  • Maintain proximity to the work area to detect and diagnose malfunctions, such as worn or damaged tools, and determine necessary adjustments or repairs.
  • Recognize defective or faulty workmanship, correct issues, and report them to the department lead.
  • Perform inspections of machined products and document results.
  • Communicate with co-workers regarding production runs.
  • Create and generate complex procedures for production processes, including machining specific parts and troubleshooting issues.
  • Test new tools and methods.
  • Maintain the condition of the cell, machines, tooling, and fixtures.
  • Collaborate with other departments (e.g., engineering, manufacturing engineering) to streamline production processes.
  • Utilize Continuous Improvement tools to identify, reduce, and eliminate waste, lowering costs.
  • Adhere to all Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work area and equipment (5S standard).
  • Work safely and follow all safety rules and procedures to ensure personal and co-worker safety.
  • Assist other departments during periods of limited or no work in the primary area.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Prefer some short-term trades training and a minimum of one year of prior machining experience.
  • Capable of learning to operate a PC accurately.
  • Ability to follow verbal instructions, read/write English, and interpret documents of some complexity, including specifications, route sheets, blueprints, charts, test information, and bills of material.
  • Ability to plan and perform sequences of operations using standard methods, make decisions on quality, tolerances, operations, and setups.
  • Ability to use power and hand tools, gauges, testing devices, and small machines to assemble components to specifications and test them.
  • Thorough knowledge of feeds, speeds, materials, and work-holding devices (e.g., fixtures, arbors, jaws), as well as a strong understanding of production processes.
  • Solid basic math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, ratios).
  • Basic understanding of machinery and its purposes/capabilities.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to accurately record daily production.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and instruct, direct, and train others.

Physical Requirements

  • Lifting up to a maximum of 40 lbs.
  • Occasional bending and lifting at the knees.
  • Frequent twisting at waist and shoulder levels.
  • Standing continuously.
  • Frequent reaching out in front of the body.
  • Sustained physical effort.
  • Capable of wearing safety glasses with permanent side shields at all times.
  • Capable of wearing steel-toed safety shoes at all times.
  • Capable of wearing other required PPE.
  • Work may be repetitive in nature.
  • Continuous mental and visual attention.
  • Visual acuity to read directions, prints, and inspect parts closely to ensure they meet specifications.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to perform assembly work.

Working Conditions

  • Typical manufacturing setting with moveable, mechanical parts and/or equipment.
  • Exposure to varying temperatures (no air conditioning, so warmer in summer and cooler in winter).
  • Exposure to dust and noise levels within required limits.
  • Frequent vibration due to the volume of parts.
  • Exposure to higher-than-normal dust levels.
