Scope and Responsibilities

  • Setup, adjust, check, and operate machining centers to perform a series of machining and turning operations on a diversified line of work to close tolerances and finish specifications requiring a considerable degree of skill, knowledge of machining techniques, and familiarity with numerical CNC machine tool operational procedures.
  • Setups involve familiarity with and understanding of program formats involving combinations of operations such as milling, turning, boring, recessing, drilling, tapping, etc., on a variety of materials to the capability of the machines and control systems.
  • Translate rotary commands into Cartesian coordinate moves in the milling and drilling of parts.
  • Apply working knowledge of Siemans programming language in order to read, run and improve programs.
  • Setup tooling, per requirements. Maximize efficiency of cutting operations and tool life by applying knowledge of feeds, speeds and ANSI/ISO insert classifications.
  • Operate inspection equipment (i.e. tesa mics, jo blocks, tool & part probes, OD & ID micrometers, depth micrometer, calipers, dial indicators) to maintain sizes and tolerances (often less than .001%).
  • Absorb responsibility for the quality of workmanship, dimensional accuracy and efficient mechanical operations.
  • Utilize available time when machine has a long cycle (i.e. operate both machines at the same time, set-up tooling for next job, retrieve and flip castings, etc.).
  • Make own crane hook ups and operate crane, as required.
  • Training to be provided
  • Follow work rules, policies, and safety procedures in performing all tasks.
  • Work from program data and setup instructions to arrange as provided, mount, and secure tooling; mount, align, and secure holding fixtures and/or locate support and camp workpiece; set stops, calibrate to reference points; use of dividing head and/or indexing fixture and dial indicators.
  • Create setup documentation including pictures, equipment lists etc. to aid in the subsequent production runs.
  • Responsible for recognizing and reporting errors in programming and operations whenever possible, and assisting systems and programming personnel to correct errors, and may also edit PPS.
  • Recommend tooling applications and operational sequences to assist in formulating practical programming for new and unusual machine operations.
  • Diagnose operating difficulties and make appropriate adjustments to correct operations or dimensional deviations.
  • Work from drawings, specifications, programs, setup instructions, and other data on a wide range of small and medium sized parts, which can involve complex configurations and close tolerances.
  • May occasionally be required to lay out work and perform machine operations without the use of pre-programmed material using manual data input.
