About the role

This full-time, first-shift (Monday-Friday) position supports MTI’s Manufacturing Services division by setting up and operating friction welding machines to produce custom-engineered solutions. The role involves a variety of tasks, including fixture/tooling installation, machine operation, part inspection, and process improvement. The ideal candidate is reliable, detail-oriented, and eager to contribute to a dynamic team in a thriving manufacturing environment.

Responsibilities

  • Work safely and use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Perform fixture and chuck changeovers, alignments using dial indicators, and set physical/software-based over-travel limits.
  • Maintain welders by replacing worn tooling (e.g., collets, pads), cleaning equipment, and lubricating as needed.
  • Start machines, load/unload workpieces (manually or via hoist), and secure parts for operation.
  • Inspect and measure welded parts to ensure conformance to customer specifications using indicators, calipers, and height gauges.
  • Accurately document inspection data (handwritten or computer-based) per required frequency.
  • Collaborate with Process Engineers to set up and run R&D jobs.
  • Use forklifts/lift trucks to move parts and tooling between areas.
  • Communicate with co-workers and supervisors to coordinate activities.
  • Create or assist in developing work instructions, SOPs, and training materials.
  • Promote MTI’s cultural values (e.g., respect, collaboration, adaptability, excellence).
  • Perform other assignments as requested and advise on technical/operational improvements.

Requirements

  • Mechanical aptitude and familiarity with hand tools.
  • Basic math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and part prints.
  • Computer literacy and critical thinking/problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency with measurement tools (dial indicators, calipers, height gauges, micrometers).
  • Familiarity with GD&T and maintaining tolerances <0.020” for requirements like runout, concentricity, and parallelism.
  • Experience with ISO9001, AS9100, NADCAP, or other accredited quality systems.
  • Knowledge of Lean manufacturing, corrective/preventative action, or Six Sigma.
  • Willingness to train others and work independently or in a team.
  • Strong communication, professionalism, and ethical standards.
  • Commitment to safety, quality, and culture.
  • Reliable attendance.

Qualifications

  • High school education or equivalent; technical certification preferred.
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment (setup/operation of machinery).
  • Preferred (not required): Forklift operation, manual/CNC lathe/mill/surface grinder experience.
