About the role

The Machine Repair tradesman diagnoses defects in operations, disassembles, repairs, replaces parts, and reassembles machines, machine tools, and mechanical equipment to operating condition. Responsibilities include layout, machining, and mechanical operations for tearing down, rebuilding, and reconditioning machines and mechanical equipment, as well as specialized mechanical repair work.

Responsibilities

  • Reline spindles and shafts
  • Scrape and fit bearings
  • Repair and adjust clutches
  • Repair valves, solenoids, and cylinders
  • Fit precision parts
  • Cut and match gears
  • Change feed and speed control gears
  • Set automatic timing devices
  • Align and balance work
  • Ensure completed work is properly functioning and in safe operating condition
  • Perform incidental tasks as required to complete larger tasks
  • Work from layout plans, blueprints, drawings, or other specifications to determine work procedures
  • Clean, lubricate, or adjust parts, equipment, or machinery
  • Disassemble machinery or equipment to remove parts and make repairs
  • Repair or replace broken or malfunctioning components of machinery or equipment
  • Maintain the operating condition of industrial production or processing machinery or equipment
  • Examine parts for defects, such as breakage or excessive wear
  • Reassemble equipment after completion of inspections, testing, or repairs
  • Observe and test the operation of machinery or equipment to diagnose malfunctions using testing devices like voltmeters
  • Operate newly repaired machinery or equipment to verify the adequacy of repairs
  • Analyze test results, machine error messages, or information from operators to diagnose equipment problems

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
  • One of the following:
    • 4 years of combined experience and training similar to a bona fide apprenticeship program as a Machine Repair
    • U.S. Department of Labor Completion of Apprenticeship Certificate as a Machine Repair
    • 8 years of documented Machine Repair experience
    • 5 years of documented Machine Repair experience and 3 years in a related trade
  • Ability, with or without reasonable accommodation, to work any shift and work overtime, including daily, weekends, and holidays as required
  • Basic knowledge of mathematics, algebra, and physics
  • Experience as a machine repair tradesman in a manufacturing environment

Skills

  • Microsoft Office
  • Computerized maintenance management systems (preferred)
  • G-Suite (preferred)
  • Strong computer skills (preferred)
  • Ability to provide mechanical support to manufacturing operations to locate and diagnose trouble in mechanical systems or equipment (preferred)
  • Ability to complete required preventive maintenance at defined intervals on all mechanical equipment (preferred)
  • Ability to perform tasks historically assigned to other mechanical classifications (e.g., pipefitter, millwright) (preferred)
