Machine Learning Software Engineer 1
At Crowe, you can build a meaningful and rewarding career. With real flexibility to balance work with life moments, you’re trusted to deliver results and make an impact. We embrace you for who you are, care for your well-being, and nurture your career. Everyone has equitable access to opportunities for career growth and leadership. Over our 80-year history, delivering excellent service through innovation has been a core part of our DNA across our audit, tax, and consulting groups. We continuously invest in innovative ideas, such as AI-enabled insights and technology-powered solutions, to enhance our services.
About the Role
We work on medium-term machine learning projects (1-6 months) with a high degree of autonomy. The primary strategy of the Toolkit Team is to develop generalizable tools for common problems and facilitate the sharing of code within and between projects.
- Work within the Data Science Team to define common problems and identify opportunities in the existing codebase to solve current and future problems
- Develop libraries and services to address common requirements for our machine learning products
- Collaborate with data scientists to get their machine learning models from prototype to production
- Champion the use and adoption of Toolkit libraries and services
Responsibilities
- Execute on tasks to achieve your project’s overarching technical vision, with responsibilities varying across the development lifecycle—from supporting client intake conversations and conducting data exploration for new projects to ongoing feature development and bugfixes for mature machine learning products in a software release cycle
- Effectively execute on tasks for your assigned project(s) with some direction and support; your code quality reflects the team's standards
- Recognize and appropriately escalate risks within a finance and accounting firm, supporting assigned mitigations
- Support your team members' growth through pair programming, code review, and/or knowledge sharing
- Uphold Crowe’s values of Care, Trust, Courage, and Stewardship, acting ethically and with integrity at all times
Requirements
- Programming experience: Your job will require coding, primarily in Python. Familiarity with another lower-level language (C/C++, Go, etc.) is a plus
- Software engineering experience: You enjoy software engineering and are proficient in algorithm design and data structures. You are comfortable working in Linux-based systems and familiar with using Docker to develop and deliver RESTful APIs. Additional experience in cloud computing, distributed systems, or CI/CD is a plus
- Capacity for autonomy: You can manage your time between research and tool development with minimal supervision
- Strong communication skills: You adjust your communication style—from technical details to high-level concepts—depending on your audience (software engineers, data scientists, or non-technical business stakeholders)
- Adaptable: You can context-shift across different areas of computer science and machine learning, sometimes within the same problem, and adjust to new requirements or approaches
- Detail oriented: You focus on building tools that "just work," identifying edge cases, developing comprehensive use cases, and adhering to software engineering best practices (e.g., maintainable code, clear documentation, and thorough test cases)
Skills to Stand Out
- Enthusiasm for coding and learning new technologies
- Excitement about exploring or improving libraries to solve problems
- Commitment to lifelong engineering, staying updated with best practices, and striving for continuous improvement
- Curiosity about machine learning (e.g., learning algorithms, data preprocessing strategies, or other areas that can enhance software solutions)
- Unique background (educational, research, or hobby) in software engineering, computer science, or related fields that brings fresh perspectives to problem-solving
Pay
A reasonable estimate of the current range is $62,000 - $100,000 per year, taking into account factors such as skill sets, experience, training, licensure, certifications, and business needs. The range has not been adjusted for geographic differentials.
