About the Role

Machine Builders convert engineering prints, BOMs, and project plans into custom automation systems used by customers across a variety of industries. This position reports directly to the Build Manager. Builders work closely with mechanical design engineers, controls engineers, controls technicians, machining specialists, and project management to bring each system to life.

Responsibilities

  • Assemble custom automation equipment per drawings
  • Read and interpret mechanical drawings and assembly and pneumatic prints
  • Troubleshoot and resolve mechanical issues during machine assembly
  • Verify assemblies meet engineering specifications and quality standards
  • Engage with mechanical design engineers, controls engineers, controls technicians, and project management to resolve build issues
  • Travel to customer sites for installation support, including domestic and international destinations
  • Operate all standard shop equipment safely and effectively
  • Follow LOTO and shop safety procedures
  • Regular lifting of objects 50 lbs or more

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; vocational or technical training valued
  • Mechanical aptitude and strong problem-solving skills
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings (experience level dependent)
  • Experience using common hand and power tools
  • Mechanical assembly or manufacturing experience preferred
  • Experience with pneumatic systems is a plus
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Positive attitude, reliability, and willingness to learn
  • Willingness to travel approximately 20% (roughly 10 weeks per year, in waves), including domestic and international destinations such as Mexico
  • Valid passport required (or willingness to obtain)
  • Valid driver’s license required
  • Builders are expected to use their own tools and toolbox; hand tools, specialty, and shop equipment provided by Axis

Qualifications by Level

  • Level 2: 1–3 years building custom industrial equipment, machines, or comparable mechanical assembly experience
  • Level 3: 3–5 years building custom industrial equipment or machines, with exposure to multiple project life cycles
