M & R District Supervisor - Structures & Custodial
About the role
The M & R District Supervisor - Structures & Custodial is a full-time Civil Service position in the Metro Parks and Recreation department. This role involves coordinating and overseeing the activities of the structures and custodial divisions. The incumbent serves as a working supervisor, requiring physical participation in strenuous work and the ability to work from heights. Knowledge of ADA guidelines and OSHA regulations is essential for identifying maintenance needs and planning long-term solutions. This position may require being on call and working after hours, including nights or weekends as needed.
Metro’s Parks and Recreation Department oversees nearly 16,000 acres of open space, including 184 parks and 107 miles of greenway, offering programs such as after-school activities, senior programs, cultural arts, fitness classes, sports leagues, and more. The department’s mission is to sustainably and equitably provide an inviting network of parks and greenways for health, wellness, and quality of life.
Responsibilities
- Supervises, trains, and evaluates employees.
- Ensures work is performed correctly, efficiently, and safely.
- Manages contractor projects for Metro Parks.
- Plans maintenance and repair projects.
- Coordinates activities with supervisors and prioritizes work orders and projects.
- Requests and determines manpower, equipment, and supplies needed.
- Conducts staff meetings and in-service training.
- Reviews work and recommends improvements.
- Counsels employees and performs disciplinary action.
- Reads and interprets blueprints and diagrams.
- Assigns duties to Structures and Custodial personnel.
- Inspects completed jobs and projects for quality assurance.
- Investigates and resolves problems and complaints or makes recommendations.
- Answers inquiries from the public.
- Requisitions equipment, materials, and supplies.
- Keeps accurate records and prepares detailed reports.
- Works above ground level, including inspecting roofs.
- Operates, tows, or transports equipment or commercial motor vehicles.
- Performs administrative duties.
Requirements
Education and Experience: High School Diploma or equivalent and six (6) years of construction, maintenance, and repair experience, including two (2) years in a supervisory capacity. No substitutions allowed.
Licenses Required: Valid Driver License.

Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078, all employees of the Metropolitan Government must reside in the State of Tennessee or become residents within six (6) months of employment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in current custodial best practices and industry norms.
- Experience with ADA guidelines and OSHA regulations.
- Experience planning and implementing complex projects.
- Ability to operate equipment with a standard transmission.
