Lunchroom/Recess Para (Level 1) - 2hrs/day, Swaney Elementary

Instructional Support Hourly Rate, Level 1 – Non-Exempt position.

Purpose

The Lunchroom/Recess Paraprofessional assists students during lunch and recess, supervising children to ensure a positive, safe environment for eating and play. This role works closely with Derby Public Schools staff and administration.

Responsibilities

• Assist in supervising students during lunch and recess.
• Respond to the individual needs of students.
• Communicate effectively with all members of the school district.
• Direct safe, organized movement of groups to and from the lunchroom and playground.
• Observe, record, and report student behavior.
• Use appropriate behavior management techniques to maintain a positive climate.
• Set high expectations for student behavior.
• Collaborate with colleagues, supervisors, and students.
• Assist in providing for the special physical needs of students.
• Immediately report accidents, assaults, destruction of property, and abusive behavior to the instructor and principal.
• Assist in lunchroom cleanup.
• Ensure district and building policies are observed during lunch and recess.
• Keep abreast of new information, innovative ideas, and techniques.
• Adhere to all district health and safety policies.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the principal, consistent with the role.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Desire to continue career improvement.
• Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
• Ability to write simple correspondence.

Physical Requirements & Environmental Conditions

• Ability to sit and/or stand for prolonged periods.
• Occasionally manually move, lift, carry, pull, or push heavy objects or materials.
• Occasionally stoop, bend, and reach.
• Work in noisy and crowded environments.
• Work indoors and outdoors year-round.
