Responsibilities
- Maintain the safe operation of the Newark City Subway (NCS) by managing all operations including Light Rail trains in revenue and non-revenue operation, non-revenue vehicles such as work trains, and a shared freight operation.
- Ensure adherence to schedules and coordinate with various departments to maintain smooth operations.
- Handle emergency situations, communicate with train operators and maintenance teams, and make decisions to ensure passenger safety and service efficiency.
- Investigate incidents, customer complaints, and recommend corrective action.
- Instruct employees in the performance of their duties and initiate disciplinary action in the absence of direct supervision.
- Maintain service requirements by monitoring service performance and adjusting schedules, route patterns, and operating plans as necessary.
- Minimize service interruptions by troubleshooting LRV-related in-service failures and directing LRV Operators to address and correct those failures.
- Communicate with customers through variable message signs, public address systems, and on-board announcements.
- Evaluate the duration and extent of service interruptions and request substitute bus service from Bus Operations if necessary.
- Coordinate emergency situations and provide notifications to relevant parties.
- Write and issue Summary Bulletin Orders and Single Page Bulletin Orders as needed.
- Review and implement revisions to standard and emergency operating procedures, safety rules, and orders.
- Participate in evaluating and recommending service changes.
- Maintain complete records on all Light Rail vehicle movements, permissions, and authorities.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent with six (6) years of applied experience in transportation operations (e.g., operating a LRT Vehicle, Conductor, Train Dispatcher, Block Operator, Bus Field Supervisor, Bus Regional, LRT Instructor, LRT Technician, or experience in electrical traction or rail signals).
- Prior supervisory experience and prior Rail operations experience preferred.
- Knowledge of MS Word and Outlook desired.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills desired.
