Responsibilities

• Perform a variety of direct and indirect patient care under the direction of a registered nurse
• Work with RN to share responsibility for a team of patients
• Administer IV fluids
• Administer medications, including certain IV medications after successful completion of certification class
• Perform venipuncture for blood collection
• Insert IV cannulas
• Conduct physical assessments and collect patient information
• Perform fingerstick and heelstick blood sugar tests
• Direct staff in patient care
• Insert foley catheters
• Dress wounds and provide skin care
• Administer Quick Cult tests
• Provide newborn care
• Provide post-partum, pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative care

Qualifications

• Graduation from an accredited Practical Nurse Program
• Current licensure by the Alabama State Board of Nursing
• After orientation, demonstrate and maintain skills and knowledge pertinent to the practice and education of a Licensed Practical Nurse
• Successful completion of NRP certification within one year
