LPN Part Time
Western State Hospital (WSH) is seeking part-time Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) for 1st and 2nd shift positions. Successful candidates must be available to work 4, 8, or 12-hour shifts on weekends (Friday, Saturday, Sunday, or Monday) from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., 7 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., or 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Part-time LPNs are required to work a minimum of 64 hours per month and must work 4 hours on either Thanksgiving Day or Christmas Day, as well as 4 hours on another holiday (e.g., the day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve, or New Year’s Day).

Responsibilities
- Provide direct patient care in a safe, therapeutic environment for a specific patient population in a 24/7 psychiatric hospital, adhering to care and treatment policies and procedures.
- Demonstrate knowledge of population-specific needs and competencies.
- Deliver quality care as part of an interdisciplinary team.
- Provide work direction to Patient Nursing Assistant (PNA) staff under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN).
- Maintain accountability in a safe, secure, and therapeutic environment.
- Foster healthy interpersonal interactions on adult acute admissions, geriatric, and extended rehabilitation service units.
- Observe and report feedback regarding interventions, treatments, behaviors, physical and emotional well-being, and other situations.
- Document and communicate patient care and progress.
- Use specialized training to promote mental wellness and recovery.
- Prioritize time to meet patient needs, including direct patient care duties after medication administration.
- Implement all individual treatment plans as written.
- Administer medications, perform treatments, and report/document patient education and response according to policy and procedure.
- Complete all annual competency training, including TOVA III with physical restraints.
- Maintain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for Healthcare Providers with the American Heart Association.
- Demonstrate knowledge of recovery and trauma-informed care.
- Work overtime due to staffing emergencies in a 24-hour, 7-day-per-week psychiatric hospital, which may include working a 16-hour shift if necessary.
Requirements
- Current LPN license eligible for use in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- Knowledge of illness and treatment modalities, including medication administration.
- Ability to implement a nursing care plan and provide guidance to other staff.
- Ability to delegate and supervise nursing staff.
- Effective communication skills (written, verbal, and sign language).
- Ability to participate in an interdisciplinary team.
- Ability to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care.
Qualifications
- Psychiatric nursing experience preferred.
- Veteran or spouse of a veteran.
- Bilingual in Spanish (preferred).
Pay
Starting pay is $36.50 per hour, with shift differentials:
- 2nd shift weekdays: +$3.50/hour
- Weekends and holidays: +$3.50/hour
Schedule
- Part-time, minimum 64 hours per month.
- Shifts: 7 a.m.–7 p.m., 7 a.m.–3 p.m., or 3 p.m.–11 p.m.
