About the role

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides ongoing assessment and nursing care to patients in the facility in accordance with Physician’s orders, policies, procedures, and processes within the scope of practice. The LPN participates in patient and family teaching, collaborates with physicians and team members to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care, and acts as a patient advocate.

Responsibilities

• Perform delegated independent nursing functions using established procedures, policies, guidelines, and standards as observed by the registered nurse.
• Administer medication accurately as evidenced by documentation in the medical record and lack of negative outcomes.
• Assist with turning over surgical cases and maintain familiarity with aseptic technique.
• Maintain and coordinate communication among patient, significant others, staff, and physicians as evidenced within the medical record and feedback from patients and the healthcare team.
• Assist in ensuring effective communication exists with patients and the care team as reflected in the plan of care.
• Work collaboratively with other members of the healthcare team in coordination of patient care.
• Assist patients and family members with concern and empathy; respect their confidentiality and privacy, and communicate courteously and respectfully.
• Answer and refer telephone calls or other inquiries to ensure accurate and timely communications; document as appropriate.
• Review the daily schedule and, under the direction of the assigned RN, prepare cases based on physician preference and facility policy; establish and arrange a safe OR environment.
• Identify and gather supplies and equipment as needed for patient care.
• Demonstrate ability to set priorities and make rapid, effective clinical perioperative decisions.
• Maintain a safe OR environment and adhere to all patient safety requirements per policies and procedures.
• Follow standard precautions, aseptic technique, and infection prevention policies and procedures.
• Demonstrate effective use of general equipment, surgical instrumentation, and equipment for decontamination and sterilization.
• Demonstrate safe and effective specimen handling and documentation.
• Demonstrate effective skills in intravenous therapy, IV management, and medication administration.
• Document perioperative care timely, legibly, and accurately.
• Communicate intraoperative care in report to intraoperative and post-operative staff.
• Conduct pre-surgical screening and post-surgical follow-up phone calls.
• Perform chart audits and other quality assurance activities.
• Attend required staff meetings and maintain compliance with educational requirements of the job and/or license/certification.
• Work well with all staff, physicians, vendors, and peers; demonstrate cooperation and teamwork.
• Maintain a pleasant and positive attitude.
• Report unusual occurrences and events in a timely and accurate fashion and perform process improvements as needed.
• Accept additional duties as requested and demonstrate willingness to get involved in the workplace.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Demonstrates eligibility for employment in the U.S.
• Graduate of an accredited school of Nursing.
• Completion of relevant state Board of Nursing-approved program.
• Current and valid LPN licensure in the State of Michigan.
• Current BLS Certification.
• ACLS certification within 1 year of hire.
• Ability to relate and work effectively with others.
• Demonstrates skills in verbal and written English communications for safe and effective patient care and to meet documentation standards.
• Willingness to participate in goal-setting and educational activities for professional advancement.
• Previous operating room experience is preferred.
• Awareness of professional nursing standards and performance in accordance with them.

Schedule

Full-time, Monday - Thursday during the day.
