EAL Teacher/Language Arts Coordinator
Position Overview
Dwight School, a Pre-K-12 coeducational school on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, is seeking an experienced and innovative EAL Teacher/Language Arts Coordinator for the 2026-2027 academic year.
EAL Responsibilities
- Planning and preparation
- Demonstrates extensive knowledge of content, IB Program(s), and pedagogy
- Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of students
- Demonstrates high-level instructional outcomes and knowledge of resources
- Designs thoughtful, targeted language instruction designed to help students succeed in the classroom, in their communications, and on assessments
- Utilizes standardized test data and departmental assessment data to inform planning and instruction in EAL sessions - The classroom environment
- Creates and maintains an inclusive classroom environment, containing consistent respect and rapport
- Establishes and sustains a strong culture for learning
- Strong classroom management and student behavior management procedures
- Effectively organizes physical space to maximize learning - Communication and Collaboration
- Communicates effectively and appropriately with parents to help support student growth and language acquisition
- Collaborates effectively with classroom teachers to provide effective push-in support for EAL students in the classroom setting
- Maintains information on student progress in a fully effective manner, including all required documents
- Provides clear, regular, and specific information about the progress, goals, and needs of EAL students to each of their classroom teachers, parents, and department head on a monthly basis
Language Arts Coordinator Responsibilities
- Curriculum
- Partner with the Kindergarten-4 grade-level teaching teams to co-plan, document, and align Language Arts instruction while supporting the ongoing development of the school's literacy curriculum and ensuring vertical and horizontal alignment across grade levels
- Oversee all Language Arts subscriptions, digital platforms, instructional resources, and materials
- Observe classroom instruction and provide coaching and feedback to support effective literacy teaching practices
- Provide targeted literacy support for students through small-group instruction, intervention, enrichment, and acceleration as needed
- Oversee the administration and tracking of Language Arts assessments - Community Engagement
- Act as a visible instructional leader at school events, including admissions, curriculum nights, and family learning events
- Communicate effectively with families regarding student growth, programming, and opportunities for enrichment in Language Arts - Administration
- Serve as a core member of the 94th Street administrative team, supporting daily school operations, including arrival and dismissal, and teacher coverage as needed
- Manage Language Arts resources and support the implementation of school-wide literacy initiatives - Professional Development
- Identify, curate, and share professional development opportunities that support excellence in Language Arts instruction
- Facilitate professional learning and collaboration among faculty to strengthen literacy teaching practices and promote curricular coherence
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Childhood Education required. Master’s Degree preferred
- TESOL Certification required
- Experience teaching to a wide range of learners including beginning EAL students
- Experience with thoughtful integration of technology into curricula
- Eagerness to contribute positively to the Dwight School community
- Willingness to engage with and learn from people with diverse backgrounds and experiences
