Lowell Elementary - Elementary Music Specialist - 1.0 FTE

About the Role

A classroom teacher fosters and enhances an effective learning environment, facilitates the development or revision of curriculum and instructional materials, establishes learning objectives and standards based upon general District guidelines, provides instruction, counsels, disciplines, and supervises to meet the individual needs of assigned students, and evaluates student performance and progress. This role involves instructing students in self-contained classes or courses in a classroom setting for grades not above grade 6, including specialists such as music, band, and physical education teachers.

Responsibilities

• Fosters an educational environment conducive to learning and student maturation; plans and implements an instructional program tailored to individual and group needs, including at-risk or special needs youth; prepares lesson plans (25%).
• Uses appropriate instructional methods and materials suited to student well-being and curriculum objectives; attends in-service training and pursues professional growth to remain current in teaching methods and techniques (25%).
• Establishes and implements classroom policies and procedures for student behavior and conduct in a positive and supportive manner; provides guidance, counseling, and discipline; makes referrals for additional assistance as needed (20%).
• Confers with students, parents or guardians, and staff to provide guidance, evaluation, and encouragement for student achievement (10%).
• Establishes classroom goals and objectives aligned with state and district guidelines; evaluates and records student progress; prepares reports for parents or guardians (5%).
• Collects and interprets data; provides reports for administrative purposes (5%).
• Directs the activities of assigned non-certificated personnel (5%).
• Attends and participates in required staff meetings and professional development activities (5%).
• Serves on staff committees as required and performs related tasks consistent with the scope of the position.
• Participates in activities to enhance personal and professional skills.

Working Conditions

• Deals with a wide range of student achievement and behavior; remains flexible to meet immediate student needs and handles multiple tasks simultaneously.
• May experience frequent interruptions and occasionally deal with distraught or difficult students.
• Potentially exposed to ordinary infectious diseases carried by students.
• May require specific physical positions, movements, and stamina to demonstrate techniques safely or conduct/direct student activities.
• May need to take precautions to prevent or lessen exposure to materials, fumes, equipment, or hot surfaces.
• May teach in classrooms without telephone communication.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree.
• Academic preparation or experience in teaching a culturally, racially, and economically diverse student population in an urban school system.
• Additional academic preparation or professional experience may be required for specific programs, such as working with bilingual students, at-risk youth, or multi-level classes.
• Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate; some positions may require first aid and CPR certification, a valid Washington State driver’s license, or a Class II driver’s license.
• Fingerprint and background check clearance.

Benefits

Seattle Public Schools benefits are administered by the Washington State Healthcare Authority (HCA) under the School Employees Benefits Board (SEBB). Eligibility for benefits is determined by the number of hours worked during the school year (September 1 through August 31). Employees scheduled to work 630 hours or more in a year are eligible for benefits.
