About the role

The long-term substitute teacher ensures all students have equal instructional opportunities and creates a classroom environment where teaching and learning are challenging, dynamic, and comprehensive. Instruction is grounded in the belief that education aims to foster personal growth, develop individual talents and values, build knowledge, and pursue understanding.

Responsibilities

• Provide for instructional needs and interests of students through effective daily lesson planning.
• Create a classroom environment conducive to learning, utilizing classroom time effectively.
• Demonstrate a variety of teaching techniques and use diverse instructional resources to implement approved curriculum.
• Use evaluation to promote student growth intellectually, physically, socially, and emotionally.
• Demonstrate fair, firm, and consistent behavior toward students and promote self-discipline.
• Communicate effectively and maintain positive interpersonal relations with students, parents, staff, and the community.
• Guide the learning process toward achieving school system goals and objectives by following school board policies and administrative procedures.
• Assist administration and staff in reaching the school’s mission by applying ethical standards in professional relationships.
• Maintain and improve professional competencies.
• Supervise students in various school settings.
• Maintain appropriate records.
• Monitor appropriate use and care of equipment, materials, and facilities.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the school principal.
• Ensure regular and predictable attendance.

Requirements

• An Associate’s degree or 60 college credits.
• Knowledge and use of culturally responsive practices.
• Regular and predictable attendance.
• Capability to perform essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to speak clearly with sufficient volume for normal conversation, telephone use, and addressing groups.
• Ability to travel to school, local locations, and state meetings, sometimes with little notice.
• Ability to maintain emotional control under stress.
• Ability to sit for long hours.
• Ability to reach with hands and arms.
• Sufficient manual dexterity to grasp, handle, manipulate, and use office technology.
• Sufficient mobility to move about the work area.
• Sufficient vision to read printed materials, see distant objects clearly, and identify and distinguish objects.
• Sufficient hearing to comprehend conversations in person and on the telephone, and distinguish sounds up to twenty feet.
• Occasionally climb or balance.
• Occasionally stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
• Occasionally lift up to fifteen pounds.

Work Environment

• Moderate noise typical of a classroom/office environment (e.g., computers, printers, telephones, conversations in classrooms, offices, hallways, and meetings).

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from an accredited institution.
• Outstanding written and oral communication skills.
• MSDE-issued professional teacher certificate with appropriate content endorsement.
• Bilingual (Spanish).
• Familiarity with FCPS policies, goals, and programs.
