Long Term Substitute Social Studies Teacher

Term of Employment: Long-term substitute for the 2026-2027 school year.

Pay

Salary range: $54,160 to $83,501, per the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Schedule

Monday through Friday, 7:45 AM to 3:15 PM. FLSA status: Exempt.

About the Role

Under the general supervision of the School Principal, this position develops students' knowledge and understanding of world cultures, cultural evolution, and social orders. The role emphasizes research skills, critical thinking, and an appreciation of diverse racial, ethnic, religious, and political groups. It fosters awareness of global interdependence, historical continuity, and contemporary issues.

Responsibilities

• Develop and administer the Social Studies curriculum in alignment with school district goals and objectives.
• Create lesson plans and instructional materials that challenge students and optimize instructional time.
• Teach social studies, incorporating history, geography, economics, political science, government systems, citizenship, and humanities.
• Develop students' understanding of diverse racial, ethnic, religious, and political groups, as well as socio-economic influences on human rights and freedom.
• Foster awareness of historical patterns, global interrelationships, and approaches to solving local, national, and world problems.
• Demonstrate how historical knowledge provides a comparative basis for evaluating current issues and predicting future actions.
• Develop students' research, interpersonal, and critical thinking skills through varied assignments, discussions, and presentations.
• Encourage critical analysis of media influence on information flow and public discourse, promoting alternative sources of information.
• Assess student learning and progress, adapting instructional methods to meet individual needs, including those of students with special needs.
• Acquire professional knowledge through seminars, workshops, or research to stay current in the educational field.
• Maintain accurate records of student activities, achievement, and attendance as required by district procedures and laws.
• Encourage parental involvement and maintain effective communication with students and parents.
• Establish and maintain classroom behavior standards to ensure a functional learning environment.
• Coordinate with other professional staff members and participate in faculty meetings and committees.
• Select and requisition appropriate books, instructional aids, and supplies, maintaining inventory records.
• Perform additional tasks as assigned by the Principal or central office administrators.

Skills & Qualifications

• Knowledge of current teaching methods, educational pedagogy, and differentiated instruction based on student learning styles.
• Knowledge of world history, including sub-topics such as geography, sociology, economics, political science, government systems, citizenship, anthropology, and humanities.
• Understanding of humanity's major problems and historical approaches to their solutions.
• Familiarity with data information systems, data analysis, and action plan formulation.
• Knowledge of applicable federal and state education laws.
• Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed.
• Strong organizational and coordination skills.
• Effective communication with students and parents.
• Ability to engage in self-evaluation and professional growth.
• Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.

Physical & Mental Demands

• Works in standard office and school building environments.

Requirements

• Pennsylvania State Certification as a Social Studies Teacher.
• Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation.
• Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in an education discipline applicable to teaching assignment (Master's Degree preferred).
• Prior successful teaching experience at the appropriate grade level is preferred.
• All employment is provisional for 90 days as required by ACT 168 of 2014.
